Flavour notes

The aroma is driven by fruit, with plum, cherry, black cherry, blackcurrant, blackberry and raspberry, lifted by floral notes of violets and rose petals. Behind that come clove, nutmeg, graphite and pencil shavings, with subtle traces of vanilla, toast, cedar, tobacco, mocha and chocolate.

On the palate it is dry, medium to full in body, with ripe red and dark fruit supported by enough freshness to keep the wine in balance. The tannins are clearly present but not heavy, youthful and at times chewy, yet capable of showing a fine, supple side. The finish lingers with spice, graphite, dark chocolate, tobacco and dried herbs.

Product info about Chateau De Fonbel 2022 Magnum (1,5l)

Château de Fonbel 2022 in magnum is a red Saint-Émilion Grand Cru from Bordeaux, made by an estate owned by the Vauthier family since 1971. The connection with Château Ausone gives it an interesting background, yet Fonbel has its own clear identity: a merlot-led blend supported by cabernet sauvignon and a small but distinctive share of carménère.

That touch of carménère is part of what makes this wine stand out. It brings a spicy, lightly smoky nuance to the ripe fruit character of the vintage. The grapes come from roughly 16 hectares south of the village of Saint-Émilion, on soils of sand, clay and gravel. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, followed by ageing partly in barrel and partly in stainless steel. The style therefore keeps the fruit in focus, while the oak influence remains subtle and supportive.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, we see this magnum as a bottle with a strong sense of place and a generous sharing format. The 1.5-litre bottle suits a table where wine is opened with others, and with the final bottles available, this particular release has become increasingly limited in our selection.

Château de Fonbel 2022 is well matched with red meat, roasted dishes, duck, lamb, game birds, veal and soft or matured cheeses. If opened while still young, a little air will help the fruit, spice and structure unfold more comfortably.

The tannins are clearly present but not heavy, youthful and at times chewy, yet capable of showing a fine, supple side. About CH DE FONBEL

Château de Fonbel is a wine estate in the Saint-Émilion region, located in Bordeaux, France. The estate belongs to the Vauthier family, who also own the famous Château Ausone. Château de Fonbel covers approximately 16 hectares of vineyards and has been managed by Alain and Pauline Vauthier since the early nineties. The vineyards are planted with merlot as the dominant grape variety, supplemented by cabernet sauvignon, petit verdot and carmenère. This composition results in a characteristic Saint-Émilion with a classic Bordeaux appearance, where the fruity character of merlot is complemented by spicy and sometimes slightly earthy notes. The wine usually matures partly in wooden barrels, contributing to its complexity, but the style remains focused on elegance and accessibility. Château de Fonbel is often appreciated as an approachable Saint-Émilion that benefits from several years of bottle ageing, but is also relatively smooth and drinkable when young. The combination of the Vauthier family expertise and the terroir around Saint-Émilion results in wines that regularly receive positive reviews from wine enthusiasts and connoisseurs.
