Philipponnat Mareuil Vin Rouge presents Champagne from a quieter, less familiar angle. This is not sparkling champagne, but a still red wine from the AOC Coteaux Champenois, made from Pinot Noir grown around Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, the village at the heart of Philipponnat.
For Drankenshop Broekmans, that is exactly what makes it worth explaining. Philipponnat is closely associated with Pinot Noir, and here the grape is shown as a red wine in its own right rather than as part of a champagne blend. Coteaux Champenois remains a small and distinctive category, especially when it comes from a house so closely linked to Mareuil.
