Flavour notes

The aromatic profile shows classic nebbiolo layering, with rosehip, sour cherry, cherry and plum alongside orange, white pepper, tobacco, leather, liquorice and a light green tea note. Spice and mineral detail give the red fruit tension rather than sweetness.

On the palate it is medium-bodied to structured, with lively acidity and tannins described as having a chalky texture. The finish is long, carrying red fruit, spice, leather and mineral nuance. Serving around 18 to 20°C suits the style; if the wine seems closed just after opening, some aeration can help it unfold.

Product info about Ceretto Barolo Cannubi San Lorenzo 2011 Magnum (1,5l)

Ceretto Barolo Cannubi San Lorenzo 2011 Magnum is a Barolo with a very precise sense of place: Cannubi San Lorenzo, in the commune of Barolo itself. Ceretto makes this wine from 100% nebbiolo and releases this cuvée only in large format. The magnum is therefore more than packaging; it suits a wine built around patience, development and a proper table setting.

The fruit comes from a very small parcel on the highest part of the Cannubi hill, where Ceretto owns the top. The site covers only around a quarter of a hectare, with sandy soils based on Marne di Sant'Agata Fossili and very old vines, including vines of more than 90 years in the central part of the vineyard. The vineyard is worked without mechanical support, underlining the scale and attention behind this Barolo.

Traditional vinification shapes the wine: fermentation in steel, long maceration and maturation in large oak casks. Ceretto also emphasises that Cannubi San Lorenzo is refined for at least ten further years in large-format bottles before release. At Drankenshop Broekmans, this is the kind of bottle we like to present to customers who are looking for Barolo with origin, structure and maturity rather than simple power. Its limited production, magnum-only release and last-bottle status make the 2011 particularly noteworthy.

The 2011 vintage in Barolo is described as expressive and relatively accessible, with ripe fruit and a more medium-bodied frame than some cooler or stricter years. Even so, the classic nebbiolo markers remain clear: acidity, tannin, floral detail, spice and a mineral edge. Wine Spectator awarded this vintage 96 points, a fitting recognition for a wine that speaks with refinement rather than volume.

About CERETTO

Ceretto is an Italian winery from Piemonte, which has been a fixture in the landscape of high-quality Italian wine since the nineteen-sixties. The family business, founded by brothers Bruno and Marcello Ceretto, is especially known for its focus on the traditional grape varieties of the region such as Nebbiolo for Barolo and Barbaresco, but also works with other local varietals like Arneis and Barbera. Ceretto has several vineyards spread out over renowned areas in Langhe and Roero and owns some of the most esteemed cru's in Piemonte. They work with respect for nature and the environment; a large part of the vineyards is now farmed organically or biodynamically. Over the years, the house has received much appreciation for the balance between innovation and tradition that characterizes their wines. The Ceretto assortment offers a broad range of red and white wines, with each product expressing as much as possible the character of the terroir and the grape. Thanks to their commitment to quality and their connection to the region, Ceretto is a beloved name among enthusiasts of Italian wine.
