Product info about Schloss Johannisberg Goldlack Riesling Trocken 2021
Goldlack Trocken 2021 sits at the very top of Schloss Johannisberg's dry Riesling range. It comes from the historic monopole vineyard surrounding the Schloss in Germany's Rheingau, a continuous site planted with Riesling since 1720. For this cuvée, the fruit is drawn from south to south-west facing parcels such as Urban-Wingert, Langenberg and Mönchen Quer.The cellar work adds depth without turning the wine into a showpiece of oak. The grapes were hand-harvested during the first nine days of October 2021, followed by 48 hours of skin contact. Fermentation took place in large 1,200-litre Stückfässer, made from oak grown in the estate's own forests, before 24 months on fine lees in the Bibliotheca Subterranea, nine metres underground at a cool, steady temperature.
The 2021 vintage in the Rheingau was cooler and wetter than the dry years that came before it. In this wine, that year shows itself through precision: a firmly dry style, high natural acidity and a taut mineral line. The Taunus quartzite soils, with loam, loess and small traces of iron oxide, are closely tied to that restrained, saline impression.
At Drankenshop Broekmans, we see this as a Riesling to open with food and a generous glass rather than as a simple aperitif. Production is noted as very limited, at 1,200 bottles, and this exact vintage has received major recognition from James Suckling, Falstaff, Vinous and Robert Parker/Wine Advocate. It belongs beside richer or spiced dishes, fish with buttery or creamy elements, and white meat.

Schloss Johannisberg is a historic German winery, located in the Rheingau region, one of the oldest and most esteemed wine areas in Germany. The estate itself, which stands high above the Rhine, is often cited as the place where the first true Riesling monocépage was cultivated. The vineyards of Schloss Johannisberg have been in use for over 900 years and are known for their steep slopes with mineral-rich soils, which produce characteristic and elegant Riesling. Notably, the estate has been closely linked to the development of quality wines in Germany over time, and it was one of the first to systematically experiment with Spätlese and Auslese. The focus is entirely on Riesling, which is reflected in the wide range of dry, semi-dry and sweet wines.
