Flavour notes

No detailed tasting notes are provided, but the stated flavour profile points to a whisky with a clear spicy side, supported by lighter fruity, floral and woody elements. Bottling at cask strength also means the 60.1% ABV is part of the drinking experience.

Peat and salinity are not indicated in the profile, so the emphasis sits more naturally on strength, spice and the subtler background notes rather than smoke or coastal character.

Product info about Mannochmore 2011 9y

Mannochmore 2011 9y is a Speyside single malt built around a very specific snapshot in time: one cask, one maturation period, one small outturn. It was distilled on 5 December 2011 and bottled on 20 January 2021 after 9 years in a Bourbon Barrel.

The appeal here lies in the combination of single cask bottling and cask strength presentation. Only 178 bottles came from this cask, bottled at 60.1% ABV, so the whisky keeps a direct, uncompromised connection to its individual barrel rather than being shaped into a larger batch style.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, this is the kind of release we value for its specificity. It is not a general introduction to Mannochmore, but a limited Speyside single malt drawn from one particular cask, now marked among the last bottles.

About MANNOCHMORE

Mannochmore shares its buildings with Glenlossie Distillery. Of the two, Mannochmore is the more recent - it was founded in 1971 and has a much larger production capacity than Glenlossie. However, both distilleries are kept running by the same team. Mannochmore was closed between 1985 and 1989, but since then it has been one of the larger distilleries within the Diageo group; it mainly provides single malt for Diageo blends. They are also pioneers in various technical areas. For example, they were one of the first distilleries in Scotland to put a biomass facility into operation to provide energy for the distillery. Mannochmore is also the distillery that released the notorious Loch Dhu bottling in 1997, a very dark whisky that provoked very mixed reactions from whisky enthusiasts.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of whisky is Mannochmore 2011 9y?

Mannochmore 2011 9y is a single malt whisky.

The word 'single' causes some confusion for many. A single malt is nothing more and nothing less than a product from a single distillery. So it has nothing to do with a single cask or even casks of the same age.

Single malt whisky is made from malted barley and distilled in the famous copper pot stills, the distinctive copper stills.

Is Mannochmore 2011 9y a no age statement whisky (NAS)?

No, Mannochmore 2011 9y is not a no age statement (NAS) whisky. The label explicitly states an age and that age represents the youngest whisky found in the bottle (or in the blend).

Is Mannochmore 2011 9y a single cask whisky?

Yes, Mannochmore 2011 9y is a single cask whisky. That makes this spirit unique of its kind, because because it only came from one cask and was not blended with other casks, only the other bottles from the same cask are exactly the same.

Is Mannochmore 2011 9y a whisky at cask strength?

Yes, Mannochmore 2011 9y is a whisky cask strength. A cask strength whisky is not diluted with water before bottling, but goes straight from the cask into the bottle and therefore retains the alcohol percentage during/after cask maturation.

One of the advantages of a cask-strength whisky is that, as a drinker, you can decide how strong you like your whisky by diluting or not diluting it with a little water yourself according to your preference, instead of the producer having already done this for you.

Is Mannochmore 2011 9y suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Mannochmore 2011 9y is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular whisky combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced whisky-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Mannochmore 2011 9y might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is Mannochmore 2011 9y een goede keuze voor mij?

This Mannochmore 2011 9y can be a whisky that suits you if you like a whisky with a spicy character. Indeed, this spiciness is quite emphatic in the flavour profile.

However, we recommend that you also check out the rest of the flavour profile, as it is of course only one part of the overall character of this whisky.

Is Mannochmore 2011 9y a tarred whisky?

No, there is no peat in the flavour profile in this Mannochmore 2011 9y whisky . The absence of any smokiness therefore makes it suitable for those who do not like a peat flavour.

Is Mannochmore 2011 9y a spicy whisky?

Yes, Mannochmore 2011 9y is a whisky with a fairly spicy flavour profile: the spiciness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

The spiciness of a spirit can come about in different ways.

  • In whisky, the spicy notes mainly arise during the maturation process in wooden casks. The type of wood used (e.g. American oak, European oak) and whether the casks have been used before (e.g. sherry casks) have a big influence on the spiciness of the whisky that comes out of them.
  • With rum, the spicy notes can also come from the barrels used, but in addition there is also a separate class of "Spiced rum" where extra spices are added.
  • Gin has a much shorter production cycle and therefore does not usually get its spiciness from wood. Spicy notes in a gin are usually the direct result of the botanicals used to "colour" the gin and give it its own identity.
Is Mannochmore 2011 9y a fruity whisky?

On its own, yes, but Mannochmore 2011 9y is a whisky with only a slightly fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this whisky is hidden in the flavour profile, balanced with the other parts of the profile.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruit and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Do you drink Mannochmore 2011 9y pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Mannochmore 2011 9y whisky best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to whisky. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your whisky, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does Mannochmore 2011 9y have a high alcohol content?

Whisky of more than 52% is rather rare. Often, such a high alcohol content is due to the fact that it is a cask strength whisky (a whisky cask strength): the whisky in that case is not diluted before bottling so it goes into the bottle at a higher alcohol content. Whisky with a high alcohol content often benefits from a few drops of water to release the aromas and make the alcohol less predominant in the glass, and in itself is also fine for use in stronger cocktails.

Is Mannochmore 2011 9y an independent bottling?

Mannochmore 2011 9y is a whisky of the Mannochmore brand bottled by the independent bottler The Single Malts of Scotland. That makes this bottle an independent bottling.

Is Mannochmore 2011 9y suitable for an Irish Coffee?

To make an Irish Coffee according to the rules of the art, you need an Irish whiskey. Since you are going to mix it with coffee and whipped cream, we recommend using a good, but not overpriced whiskey. This Mannochmore 2011 9y is a whiskey, but because this whiskey comes from Scotland it is not the best choice to make a "real" Irish Coffee.

Did you know that the first Irish Coffee was invented in 1942 by bartender Joe Sheridan? He was working at the airport in Foynes, in the west of Ireland. The barman saw some tired passengers and figured they needed coffee with something special. To perk them up, he poured them coffee with a dash of whiskey mixed in and some coffee on top. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridon replied, "No, my friend, this is Irish Coffee." And so it was.

Is Mannochmore 2011 9y vegan?

According to the data currently available to us, we cannot state with certainty that this product is vegan and this claim is not explicitly made by the brand.

Is Mannochmore 2011 9y a biological whisky?

Based on the information available to us, we can conclude that this Mannochmore 2011 9y whisky from Mannochmore is not an organic product.

How do I get started on Scotch whisky?

Many people assume that a more expensive bottle of Scotch whisky is automatically better. It sounds logical: the higher the price, the better the quality. But in reality, the difference between a bottle of a few tens and one worth thousands of euros is rarely purely in the taste. What you pay has much more to do with age, scarcity, marketing and reputation than with what you actually taste in your glass.

To understand this properly, it helps to look at Scotch in different "levels". Each level tells you something about what you are drinking and, more importantly, what you are paying for, but not every epicurean goes through all these levels.

You can read all about it in our blog post Why an expensive Scotch doesn't necessarily taste better - the different levels of Scotch.
