Flavour notes

The aromatic profile centres on red fruit, with cherry, strawberry and berry fruit at its core. Around that come floral notes, cedar, tobacco, earth and spice, with touches of coffee, dark chocolate, bitter orange, clove and cinnamon.

On the palate it is dry, structured and full-bodied, yet marked by tension and focus. The tannins are firm but integrated, with a relatively supple feel. A mineral line and fresh acidity carry the wine into a long finish.

Product info about Poggio Antico Brunello Di Montalcino 2017 Magnum (1,5l)

Poggio Antico Brunello di Montalcino 2017 in magnum is a Tuscan red wine with a strong sense of origin. It comes from Montalcino, where Poggio Antico works high vineyard slopes south of the village. The vineyards sit at around 480 to 570 metres above sea level, on moderately deep, low-fertility soils with gravel and stones.

The 2017 vintage was marked by extreme dryness and one of the hottest summers of the preceding decades. According to the producer, balance was maintained through winter water reserves and the altitude of the vineyards. Made from 100% Sangiovese, this Brunello is built from a selection of different vineyard parcels and forms the central Brunello expression of Poggio Antico, rather than a Riserva or separate cuvée.

Fermentation took place in stainless steel, followed by 30 months in traditional large Slavonian oak casks and a further 18 months in bottle. That long maturation gives the wine its classical Brunello frame: ripe Sangiovese fruit, spice, earthy depth, tannins and fresh acidity. At Drankenshop Broekmans, this is the kind of Italian bottle we like to present when someone is looking for a serious Brunello with the added presence of a 1.5 litre magnum.

The 2017 vintage also received strong recognition from international critics including James Suckling, Wine Advocate, Jane Anson and Wine Spectator. With the last bottles now in stock, it is a wine worth considering carefully.

About POGGIO ANTICO

Poggio Antico is a wine estate located in the heart of Tuscany, near the town of Montalcino. The estate focuses on the production of mainly Brunello di Montalcino and Rosso di Montalcino, two renowned Italian red wines made from 100% Sangiovese grapes. Poggio Antico has vineyards situated at about 450 meters above sea level, which contributes to a favorable microclimate and a slow, balanced ripening of the grapes. Since its founding in the 1970s, the winery has developed into an established name within the region, especially because of the careful selection of grapes and the preservation of traditional production methods. The wines of Poggio Antico are known for their refined character, freshness, and structure, qualities that arise through a careful approach both in the vineyard and in the cellar. The range includes different expressions of Brunello, including riserva wines that have undergone longer aging. Thanks to its location and craftsmanship, the estate manages to express the typical power and elegance of Montalcino wines, making Poggio Antico an interesting choice for lovers of Italian red wine.
