Haut-Batailley Verso 2019 is the second wine of Château Haut-Batailley, a Pauillac estate on Bordeaux's Left Bank. Verso takes its cue from the same terroir as the grand vin, but presents it in a more approachable frame: Cabernet Sauvignon leads the blend, supported by Merlot, from the estate's vineyards in the southern part of Pauillac near Saint-Julien.The 2019 vintage brought healthy fruit, small berries from early-summer water stress and good concentration, while later rainfall helped preserve freshness through to harvest. The grapes were hand-picked and carefully sorted, followed by around three weeks of vatting. Ageing took place for 8 months in one-year-old barriques, so the wood influence remains discreet rather than dominant.
At Drankenshop Broekmans, this is the kind of Bordeaux we like to present when someone wants Pauillac structure without moving straight into the more demanding profile of a young grand vin. It has tannin, freshness and mid-palate presence, yet it is shaped with earlier drinkability in mind. With only the last bottles remaining, it is a particularly interesting 2019 to consider.
Serve it slightly cool for red wine, around 16 to 18 °C, with flavourful dishes such as lamb, game or duck breast.

About CH HAUT-BATAILLEY
Château Haut-Batailley is a winery from the Bordeaux region in France, more specifically from the renowned Pauillac appellation in the Médoc. The estate has a long history in the wine world, dating back to the 18th century. Since the Bordeaux classification of 1855, Château Haut-Batailley has belonged to the Crus Classés as a fifth Grand Cru Classé (Cinquième Cru). For a long time, the estate was managed by the Borie family, until it was taken over in 2017 by the Cazes family, also known from Château Lynch-Bages. The vineyards are located on classic gravel soils, characteristic of Pauillac, and cover more than 20 hectares. The grape varieties are traditional for this region, with an emphasis on Cabernet Sauvignon, supplemented with Merlot and a small share of Cabernet Franc. Château Haut-Batailley is known for its wines that combine power, elegance and refined complexity, often with a solid structure and potential for long aging. The estate works with respect for tradition, but under recent ownership has also invested in further quality and modernization of viticulture and vinification.
