Flavour notes
The colour is deep garnet to purple-red. Aromatically, Vieux Chateau Certan 2017 brings together red and dark fruit: raspberry, blackcurrant, black cherry, blackberry, plum and mulberry. These are joined by violet, rose, liquorice, tobacco and truffle, with graphite, iron-like minerality and occasional hints of mint, eucalyptus, cocoa or bitter chocolate.On the palate it is fresh, focused and concentrated without feeling overly heavy. The ripe fruit is held in check by clear acidity, giving the wine tension and drive. Medium to full in body, it has fine-grained, polished tannins that remain firm enough for further bottle ageing. The finish is long, mineral, lightly spiced and aromatically persistent.

Vieux Chateau Certan 2017 is the Grand Vin of this Pomerol estate, built around Merlot with Cabernet Franc and a small proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2017 blend is 80% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, reflecting the estate's mix of clay, clay-gravel and gravel-rich parcels on the Pomerol plateau.The vintage has a clear identity. An early growing season, rapid flowering in warm May weather and favourable September conditions allowed the varieties to be harvested separately at optimum ripeness. The estate describes 2017 in terms of colour, fruit and freshness, making this a more classical and restrained expression rather than an especially heavy one. Ageing with 70% new oak adds structure while keeping the wine's fresh line in focus.
At Drankenshop Broekmans, this is the kind of Bordeaux we value for the way its origin, vintage character and ageing potential come together. Bottled in May 2019, it was made with medium to long-term cellaring in mind. The reputation of the wine is also supported by very high critical recognition, including 98-point assessments from Robert Parker Wine Advocate and James Suckling.
With only the last bottles remaining, Vieux Chateau Certan 2017 now carries an added sense of scarcity. It is a serious Pomerol for those who appreciate ripe red and dark fruit, firm but refined structure and a fresher, more classically framed Bordeaux style. It is particularly well placed alongside meat dishes and veal.

About VIEUX CHATEAU CERTAN
Vieux Chateau Certan is a respected winery from the renowned Bordeaux region in France, more specifically located in the heart of Pomerol. This vineyard has a long history, with roots dating back to the early 18th century. For generations, the estate has been family-owned, and it is currently run by Alexandre Thienpont. The vineyard, with an area of approximately 14 hectares, is situated on the characteristic clay and gravel soils of Pomerol that are internationally acclaimed for the unique character they impart to the wines. Mainly Merlot grapes are grown here, which, together with smaller amounts of Cabernet Franc and sometimes Cabernet Sauvignon, form the basis for the house`s cuvees.
