Product info about Old School Malt 51y Coastal

Old School Malt 51y Coastal is a 51-year-old Scotch malt whisky from Batch #5 of the Coastal Edition. Its character is built around the meeting point of maritime influence and the rich depth of a second-fill Oloroso cask.

The long maturation brings together dried fruit, cacao, toasted oak and patinated leather, with a subtle salty edge running through it. A light touch of smoke adds depth rather than weight, keeping the whisky refined and measured.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, this is the kind of bottle we would introduce as a slow, contemplative dram: mature, woody, warmly fruity and elegant. It is bottled at 44.0% ABV, at cask strength and with its natural colour preserved.

The aroma brings dried figs, orange peel and cacao, with a gentle maritime salinity underneath. Toasted oak, patinated leather and a light smokiness add further depth.

On the palate it is rich and warming, showing dark fruit, spices and pronounced Sherry notes. The wood structure supports the generous fruity sweetness, while the finish is long and elegant, with coastal touches, old oak and lingering Sherry sweetness.

About UNDISCLOSED

Undisclosed whisky from Scotland generally refers to Scotch whiskies for which the specific distillery of origin is not made public. This type of bottling is popular among independent bottlers who purchase casks from various distilleries and release them under their own label. In many cases, the choice is made on purpose not to mention the origin, for example due to contractual agreements with the distillery or to focus on the tasting experience instead of the name. Although the exact place of production and details about the maturation are often not shared, the contents always comply with the strict Scottish regulations for whisky, which among other things means that it has matured for at least three years in oak casks in Scotland. These kinds of bottlings are loved by adventurous whisky enthusiasts who like to be surprised by the versatility and character of Scotch whisky, without preconceived expectations about the house of origin. Undisclosed whiskies can be either single malt or blended and often offer a more interesting price tag than comparable bottlings with a well-known name.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of whisky is Old School Malt 51y Coastal?

Old School Malt 51y Coastal is a blended malt whisky .

Blended malt whisky is a blend of exclusively malt whiskies sourced from different distilleries. The major difference from "regular" blended whisky is that blended malts do not use grain whisky.

Although not common, Compass Box's trendy Blended Malt Whiskies might ring a bell. They do not call themselves "blenders", but "whiskymakers" and they select the best whiskies from the best distilleries for their unique blends.

Is Old School Malt 51y Coastal a no age statement whisky (NAS)?

No, Old School Malt 51y Coastal is not a no age statement (NAS) whisky. The label explicitly states an age and that age represents the youngest whisky found in the bottle (or in the blend).

Is Old School Malt 51y Coastal a single cask whisky?

No, Old School Malt 51y Coastal is not a single cask whisky.

Is Old School Malt 51y Coastal a whisky at cask strength?

No, Old School Malt 51y Coastal is not whisky at cask strength.

Is Old School Malt 51y Coastal suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Old School Malt 51y Coastal is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular whisky combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced whisky-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Old School Malt 51y Coastal might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is Old School Malt 51y Coastal een goede keuze voor mij?

This Old School Malt 51y Coastal can be a whisky that suits you if you like a whisky with a woody character. Indeed, this woodiness is quite emphatic in the flavour profile.

However, we recommend that you also check out the rest of the flavour profile, as this is of course only one part of the overall character of this whisky.

Is Old School Malt 51y Coastal a tarred whisky?

On its own, yes, but Old School Malt 51y Coastal is one whisky in which the smokiness is only very slightly present in the flavour profile. So you will find some peatiness in it, but it is balanced with the rest and does not take over.

Peat is a typical flavour associated with a particular type of whisky. It is a flavour you have to (learn to) love. A whisky like this one, which is only mildly peated, is a great stepping stone to get acquainted with this flavour type.

Is Old School Malt 51y Coastal a spicy whisky?

Yes, Old School Malt 51y Coastal is a whisky with a fairly spicy flavour profile: the spiciness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

The spiciness of a spirit can come about in different ways.

  • In whisky, the spicy notes mainly arise during the maturation process in wooden casks. The type of wood used (e.g. American oak, European oak) and whether the casks have been used before (e.g. sherry casks) have a big influence on the spiciness of the whisky that comes out of them.
  • With rum, the spicy notes can also come from the barrels used, but in addition there is also a separate class of "Spiced rum" where extra spices are added.
  • Gin has a much shorter production cycle and therefore does not usually get its spiciness from wood. Spicy notes in a gin are usually the direct result of the botanicals used to "colour" the gin and give it its own identity.
Is Old School Malt 51y Coastal a fruity whisky?

Yes, Old School Malt 51y Coastal is a whisky with a moderately fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruit and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Do you drink Old School Malt 51y Coastal pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Old School Malt 51y Coastal whisky best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to whisky. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your whisky, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does Old School Malt 51y Coastal have a high alcohol content?

The alcohol content of this Old School Malt 51y Coastal is higher than what you would expect from an average whisky expect. While not extremely exceptional, a whisky of around 46% is somewhat rarer anyway. Most whisky is usually closer to 40%.

Is Old School Malt 51y Coastal an independent bottling?

Old School Malt 51y Coastal is a whisky of the Undisclosed brand bottled by the independent bottler Signatory. That makes this bottle an independent bottling.

Is Old School Malt 51y Coastal suitable for an Irish Coffee?

To make an Irish Coffee according to the rules of the art, you need an Irish whiskey. Since you are going to mix it with coffee and whipped cream, we recommend using a good, but not overpriced whiskey. This Old School Malt 51y Coastal is a whiskey, but because this whiskey comes from Scotland it is not the best choice to make a "real" Irish Coffee.

Did you know that the first Irish Coffee was invented in 1942 by bartender Joe Sheridan? He was working at the airport in Foynes, in the west of Ireland. The barman saw some tired passengers and figured they needed coffee with something special. To perk them up, he poured them coffee with a dash of whiskey mixed in and some coffee on top. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridon replied, "No, my friend, this is Irish Coffee." And so it was.

Is Old School Malt 51y Coastal vegan?

According to the data currently available to us, we cannot state with certainty that this product is vegan and this claim is not explicitly made by the brand.

Is Old School Malt 51y Coastal a biological whisky?

Based on the information available to us, we can conclude that this Old School Malt 51y Coastal whisky from Undisclosed is not an organic product.

How do I get started on Scotch whisky?

Many people assume that a more expensive bottle of Scotch whisky is automatically better. It sounds logical: the higher the price, the better the quality. But in reality, the difference between a bottle of a few tens and one worth thousands of euros is rarely purely in the taste. What you pay has much more to do with age, scarcity, marketing and reputation than with what you actually taste in your glass.

To understand this properly, it helps to look at Scotch in different "levels". Each level tells you something about what you are drinking and, more importantly, what you are paying for, but not every epicurean goes through all these levels.

You can read all about it in our blog post Why an expensive Scotch doesn't necessarily taste better - the different levels of Scotch.
