This magnum of Pichon Comtesse Réserve 2021 shows Pauillac in a refined, carefully defined register. It is the second wine of Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, a property known as a Deuxième Grand Cru Classé in the 1855 classification. The 1.5-litre bottle is not a separate cuvée, but it gives this 2021 release a particularly handsome presence on the table.The 2021 vintage in Bordeaux demanded precision. Cool, wet conditions and strong disease pressure made selection important, and the final blend reflects the strength of cabernet sauvignon that year: 56% cabernet sauvignon, 36% merlot and 8% petit verdot. Rather than a broad or weighty style, this vintage leans towards freshness, aromatic clarity and a finely drawn structure.
The wine was vinified parcel by parcel, with grapes moved by gravity into temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, followed by 12 months in oak barrels, 40% of them new. Ch Pichon Comtesse, fully known as Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, originates from the prestigious Bordeaux region in France and belongs to the Pauillac appellation. This winery traces its origins back to the 19th century and is internationally renowned for its elegant red wines, in which cabernet sauvignon usually plays the leading role, often complemented by merlot and smaller proportions of cabernet franc and petit verdot. The vineyards are situated on the characteristic gravel soils of the left bank of the Gironde, which contributes to the structure and aging potential of the wines. Château Pichon Comtesse received the status of Deuxième Cru Classé in the 1855 Bordeaux classification, placing it among the second highest rank of the Medoc vineyards.
