Les Griffons de Pichon Baron 2020 is a red Pauillac from Bordeaux, produced by Château Pichon-Longueville Baron. It is one of the estate's second wines, introduced with the 2012 vintage, and this bottle is the 1.5 litre magnum format. For a wine with this much structure and depth, that larger format feels very much at home on a generous table or in a carefully chosen cellar selection.The 2020 blend is made up of 50% merlot, 42% cabernet sauvignon and 8% petit verdot. The grapes come mainly from gravelly plots close to the Gironde estuary, an origin that helps anchor the wine firmly in Pauillac. Maturation lasted 18 months, split between 50% new barrels and 50% one-year-old barrels.
The vintage itself had real contrasts: a historically wet winter, a tropical spring, followed by warm, dry conditions and August thunderstorms in Pauillac. According to the estate, the merlot benefited strongly from that rain, while the cabernet grapes remained small and concentrated. That background helps explain the colour, tannic frame and energy of Les Griffons 2020.
