Zeni Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Classico Vigne Alte 2017 comes from Valpolicella Classica, the hill area north of Verona. The VA in the product name refers to Vigne Alte, a Zeni selection linked to the producer's quality-focused work that began in the 1980s.The wine is made from Corvina, Corvinone and Rondinella, hand-selected from hillside vineyards. After harvest, the grapes are dried for around three months in small crates using the appassimento method. This concentrates sugars, extract, aromas and glycerine before traditional skin fermentation and maceration.
Ageing takes place in old 25 hl oak casks for 2 to 4 years, depending on the vintage. That gives the wine the full, warm structure associated with Amarone, while the 2017 also shows freshness, fine tannins and a savoury, mineral finish. Zeni recommends drinking the wine from the fifth year after bottling, so the 2017 is now within the producer's indicated drinking phase.
