The broad flavour impression is led by spice. Fruit, floral tones and wood are present in a lighter supporting role rather than as dominant elements.

At 57.1% cask strength, the whisky comes across as direct and forceful. It is not centred on peat smoke or salty notes, but on a spiced core with more delicate accents around it.

Product info about Paul John 2016 4y

Paul John 2016 4y shows Indian single malt through the lens of one individual cask rather than a broad distillery release. Distilled in 2016 and bottled in June 2021, it spent four years in a bourbon barrel before being bottled by Campbeltown Whisky Company under the Watt Whisky label.

What makes this release interesting is its narrow focus. It is a single cask bottling, drawn from just 264 bottles, and presented at cask strength at 57.1%. That gives it a more direct connection to the individual barrel than a larger-batch whisky would have.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, we see bottlings like this as a fine way to approach a familiar distillery name from a different angle. The profile points mainly towards spice, supported by lighter fruit, floral and woody notes, without a peated or salty emphasis.

Now down to its last bottles, this Paul John feels like a concise snapshot: young, powerful, independently bottled and tied very clearly to one specific cask.

About PAUL JOHN

This single malt originates from the historic region of Goa, which in the past has welcomed many traveling merchants. This city was an inevitable stop along the famous Silk Road. Since 1992, Paul P. John created blends, until in 2008 they took up the challenge to produce an exceptional single malt. The Master Blender Michaël John took the lead in the technical development of the whole project. For that, he makes as much use as possible of Indian ingredients to maintain the identity of his whisky. He personally oversees both the quality of the production process, the malting, and the bottling. The distillery uses a six-row summer barley, grown on the foothills of the Himalayas. Six pot stills have a capacity of 3000 liters per day. The new make flows from the stills at 63.5% but goes into cask at 55%. Unlike the Scottish or Irish climate, the specific climate in Goa (a tropical coastal climate with high temperatures) leads to a concentration of the alcohol over time, which contributes to the exceptional maturation of this whisky.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of whisky is Paul John 2016 4y?

Paul John 2016 4y is a single malt whisky.

The word 'single' causes some confusion for many. A single malt is nothing more and nothing less than a product from a single distillery. So it has nothing to do with a single cask or even casks of the same age.

Single malt whisky is made from malted barley and distilled in the famous copper pot stills, the distinctive copper stills.

Is Paul John 2016 4y a no age statement whisky (NAS)?

No, Paul John 2016 4y is not a no age statement (NAS) whisky. The label explicitly states an age and that age represents the youngest whisky found in the bottle (or in the blend).

Is Paul John 2016 4y a single cask whisky?

Yes, Paul John 2016 4y is a single cask whisky. That makes this spirit unique of its kind, because because it only came from one cask and was not blended with other casks, only the other bottles from the same cask are exactly the same.

Is Paul John 2016 4y a whisky at cask strength?

Yes, Paul John 2016 4y is a whisky cask strength. A cask strength whisky is not diluted with water before bottling, but goes straight from the cask into the bottle and therefore retains the alcohol percentage during/after cask maturation.

One of the advantages of a cask-strength whisky is that, as a drinker, you can decide how strong you like your whisky by diluting or not diluting it with a little water yourself according to your preference, instead of the producer having already done this for you.

Is Paul John 2016 4y suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Paul John 2016 4y is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular whisky combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced whisky-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Paul John 2016 4y might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is Paul John 2016 4y een goede keuze voor mij?

This Paul John 2016 4y can be a whisky that suits you if you like a whisky with a spicy character. Indeed, this spiciness is quite emphatic in the flavour profile.

However, we recommend that you also check out the rest of the flavour profile, as it is of course only one part of the overall character of this whisky.

Is Paul John 2016 4y a tarred whisky?

No, there is no peat in the flavour profile in this Paul John 2016 4y whisky . The absence of any smokiness therefore makes it suitable for those who do not like a peat flavour.

Is Paul John 2016 4y a spicy whisky?

Yes, Paul John 2016 4y is a whisky with a fairly spicy flavour profile: the spiciness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

The spiciness of a spirit can come about in different ways.

  • In whisky, the spicy notes mainly arise during the maturation process in wooden casks. The type of wood used (e.g. American oak, European oak) and whether the casks have been used before (e.g. sherry casks) have a big influence on the spiciness of the whisky that comes out of them.
  • With rum, the spicy notes can also come from the barrels used, but in addition there is also a separate class of "Spiced rum" where extra spices are added.
  • Gin has a much shorter production cycle and therefore does not usually get its spiciness from wood. Spicy notes in a gin are usually the direct result of the botanicals used to "colour" the gin and give it its own identity.
Is Paul John 2016 4y a fruity whisky?

On its own, yes, but Paul John 2016 4y is a whisky with only a slightly fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this whisky is hidden in the flavour profile, balanced with the other parts of the profile.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruit and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Do you drink Paul John 2016 4y pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Paul John 2016 4y whisky best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to whisky. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your whisky, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does Paul John 2016 4y have a high alcohol content?

Whisky of more than 52% is rather rare. Often, such a high alcohol content is due to the fact that it is a cask strength whisky (a whisky cask strength): the whisky in that case is not diluted before bottling so it goes into the bottle at a higher alcohol content. Whisky with a high alcohol content often benefits from a few drops of water to release the aromas and make the alcohol less predominant in the glass, and in itself is also fine for use in stronger cocktails.

Is Paul John 2016 4y an independent bottling?

Paul John 2016 4y is a whisky of the Paul John brand bottled by the independent bottler Campbeltown Whisky Company. That makes this bottle an independent bottling.

Is Paul John 2016 4y suitable for an Irish Coffee?

To make an Irish Coffee according to the rules of the art, you need an Irish whiskey. Since you are going to mix it with coffee and whipped cream, we recommend using a good, but not overpriced whiskey. This Paul John 2016 4y is a whiskey, but because this whiskey comes from India it is not the best choice to make a "real" Irish Coffee.

Did you know that the first Irish Coffee was invented in 1942 by bartender Joe Sheridan? He was working at the airport in Foynes, in the west of Ireland. The barman saw some tired passengers and figured they needed coffee with something special. To perk them up, he poured them coffee with a dash of whiskey mixed in and some coffee on top. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridon replied, "No, my friend, this is Irish Coffee." And so it was.
