Le Petit Smith Haut Lafitte Rouge 2022 is the second wine of Château Smith Haut Lafitte from Pessac-Léognan in Bordeaux, France. It comes from the château's own estate vineyards, planted in one continuous block on Günz gravel soils, with vines listed in the technical sheet as averaging 49 years of age.For the 2022 vintage, the blend is 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Sauvignon. According to the producer, the wine comes from organic and biodynamic farming. The winemaking is deliberately precise: a double grape selection before and after destemming, no crushing before fermentation, and gentle extraction through pigeage and/or remontage. The wine then spends 14 months in barriques, 20% of them new, made in the château's own cooperage.
The 2022 season was early, dry and warm, with heatwaves and an early harvest. The château describes the red grapes as small, concentrated, aromatic and tannin-rich, while retaining freshness. Smith Haut Lafitte is a winery from the Bordeaux region in France, specifically located in the Pessac-Léognan appellation, south of the city of Bordeaux. The estate has a history dating back to the 14th century, but the name Smith Haut Lafitte became known in the 18th century thanks to the Scottish merchant George Smith, who acquired the estate and linked his name to it. Today, the Château is owned by Daniel and Florence Cathiard, who have been managing it since 1990. Smith Haut Lafitte produces both red and white wines, with the reds generally made from a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, and the whites mainly from Sauvignon Blanc, complemented by Sémillon and Sauvignon Gris.
