Flavour notes

The aroma opens with rich, Sherry-soaked smoke, followed by raisins, red fruit and orange peel. A rounded fruity sweetness helps bring the peat into balance and gives the nose extra depth.

On the palate it is intense and generous, showing dark chocolate, sticky raisins and a pronounced sweetness. Barbecue-like smoke runs through the middle, before a long, warming finish of ashy smoke, rolling sweetness and rich spicy notes.

Product info about Kilchoman Sanaig Cask Strength 2026

Kilchoman Sanaig Cask Strength 2026 takes the familiar Sanaig style and presents it with more weight and concentration. The recipe remains close to the original, with maturation led mainly by Sherry casks and supported by Bourbon casks. The key difference is the strength: instead of being reduced to 46%, this edition is bottled at its natural cask strength of 57.5%.

That higher bottling strength brings the more generous side of Kilchoman's Islay single malt into sharper focus. Peat smoke, Sherry-led richness, dried fruit, red fruit and warming spice all feel more pronounced, while the whisky remains unchill-filtered and bottled without added colouring.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, this is the kind of release we would introduce to someone who already enjoys Sanaig and wants to experience that same character in a more powerful, undiluted form.

About KILCHOMAN

Kilchoman started producing whisky in 2005. It was the first time in many decades that another new distillery opened on the mythical island of Islay. More so, now, almost 20 years later, it has emerged that Kilchoman was one of the first of a huge wave of new Scottish distilleries - more than 50 have joined in recent years. That Kilchoman would be a keeper was written in the stars. From the outset, what stood out was how the focus was always on quality first, without compromise. Those compliments are for Anthony Wills, the Englishman who dared to start something new. Together with his two sons, he has since built Kilchoman into a fixture on the whisky landscape, and the distillery has steadily expanded in terms of production capacity. Currently, they can produce up to 650,000 litres there on an annual basis, and plans are to grow even further, towards the million mark. We certainly don't mind that, as what is made there is always in taste.

The house style is a firmly-turfed whisky, entirely in the classic Islay style. The basic range consists of the Machir Bay (aged almost entirely in bourbon casks), the Sanaig (about 50/50 bourbon and sherry casks) and the Loch Gorm (mostly sherry cask). There is also the 100% Islay, for which they work with barley grown exclusively on Islay, and the Batch Strength, a recent addition at a higher alcohol content. Kilchoman single casks are always an adventure, as there is no shying away from experimenting with special cask maturities like tequila, Sauternes, Madeira or STR (Shave, Toast, Rechar). This makes Kilchoman products favourites of whisky connoisseurs.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of whisky is Kilchoman Sanaig Cask Strength 2026?

Kilchoman Sanaig Cask Strength 2026 is a single malt whisky.

The word 'single' causes some confusion for many. A single malt is nothing more and nothing less than a product from a single distillery. So it has nothing to do with a single cask or even casks of the same age.

Single malt whisky is made from malted barley and distilled in the famous copper pot stills, the distinctive copper stills.

Is Kilchoman Sanaig Cask Strength 2026 a no age statement whisky (NAS)?

Yes, Kilchoman Sanaig Cask Strength 2026 is a no age statement (NAS) whisky. But what exactly does that mean?

According to the rules, when an age is stated on the bottle, it must always be the youngest whisky in the blend and not the age that is the most represented percentage-wise in the blend. A producer will therefore consciously choose not to state an age on his bottle in two cases: when an old whisky is blended with a small proportion of younger whisky, or when young whisky is blended with a proportion of older whisky. In the first case, he does not want to put a young age on his bottle if his blend contains mainly older whisky, and in the second case, from a marketing point of view it is more interesting to go out with that particle of older whisky.

Is Kilchoman Sanaig Cask Strength 2026 a single cask whisky?

No, Kilchoman Sanaig Cask Strength 2026 is not a single cask whisky.

Is Kilchoman Sanaig Cask Strength 2026 a whisky at cask strength?

Yes, Kilchoman Sanaig Cask Strength 2026 is a whisky cask strength. A cask strength whisky is not diluted with water before bottling, but goes straight from the cask into the bottle and therefore retains the alcohol percentage during/after cask maturation.

One of the advantages of a cask-strength whisky is that, as a drinker, you can decide how strong you like your whisky by diluting or not diluting it with a little water yourself according to your preference, instead of the producer having already done this for you.

Is Kilchoman Sanaig Cask Strength 2026 suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Kilchoman Sanaig Cask Strength 2026 is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular whisky combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced whisky-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Kilchoman Sanaig Cask Strength 2026 might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is Kilchoman Sanaig Cask Strength 2026 een goede keuze voor mij?

This Kilchoman Sanaig Cask Strength 2026 can be a whisky one that suits you if you like a whisky with a smoky character. Indeed, the peat flavour is quite prominent in the flavour profile.

However, we recommend that you also look at the rest of the flavour profile, as this peatiness is of course only one part of the overall character of this whisky.

Is Kilchoman Sanaig Cask Strength 2026 a tarred whisky?

Yes, Kilchoman Sanaig Cask Strength 2026 is a whisky with a reasonably peated flavour profile: the smokiness of this whisky will be unmistakable with every sip. However, it is more moderate than in the most intensely peated whisky.

Peaty, smoky or peat is a typical flavour associated with a particular type of whisky. It is a flavour you have to (learn to) love.

Is Kilchoman Sanaig Cask Strength 2026 a spicy whisky?

Yes, Kilchoman Sanaig Cask Strength 2026 is a whisky with a fairly spicy flavour profile: the spiciness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

The spiciness of a spirit can come about in different ways.

  • In whisky, the spicy notes mainly arise during the maturation process in wooden casks. The type of wood used (e.g. American oak, European oak) and whether the casks have been used before (e.g. sherry casks) have a big influence on the spiciness of the whisky that comes out of them.
  • With rum, the spicy notes can also come from the barrels used, but in addition there is also a separate class of "Spiced rum" where extra spices are added.
  • Gin has a much shorter production cycle and therefore does not usually get its spiciness from wood. Spicy notes in a gin are usually the direct result of the botanicals used to "colour" the gin and give it its own identity.
Is Kilchoman Sanaig Cask Strength 2026 a fruity whisky?

Yes, Kilchoman Sanaig Cask Strength 2026 is a whisky with a moderately fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruit and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Do you drink Kilchoman Sanaig Cask Strength 2026 pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Kilchoman Sanaig Cask Strength 2026 whisky best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to whisky. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your whisky, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does Kilchoman Sanaig Cask Strength 2026 have a high alcohol content?

Whisky of more than 52% is rather rare. Often, such a high alcohol content is due to the fact that it is a cask strength whisky (a whisky cask strength): the whisky in that case is not diluted before bottling so it goes into the bottle at a higher alcohol content. Whisky with a high alcohol content often benefits from a few drops of water to release the aromas and make the alcohol less predominant in the glass, and in itself is also fine for use in stronger cocktails.

Is Kilchoman Sanaig Cask Strength 2026 an independent bottling?

No, Kilchoman Sanaig Cask Strength 2026 is an official bottling of Kilchoman.

Is Kilchoman Sanaig Cask Strength 2026 suitable for an Irish Coffee?

To make an Irish Coffee according to the rules of the art, you need an Irish whiskey. Since you are going to mix it with coffee and whipped cream, we recommend using a good, but not overpriced whiskey. This Kilchoman Sanaig Cask Strength 2026 is a whiskey, but because this whiskey comes from Scotland it is not the best choice to make a "real" Irish Coffee.

Did you know that the first Irish Coffee was invented in 1942 by bartender Joe Sheridan? He was working at the airport in Foynes, in the west of Ireland. The barman saw some tired passengers and figured they needed coffee with something special. To perk them up, he poured them coffee with a dash of whiskey mixed in and some coffee on top. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridon replied, "No, my friend, this is Irish Coffee." And so it was.

Is Kilchoman Sanaig Cask Strength 2026 vegan?

According to the data currently available to us, we cannot state with certainty that this product is vegan and this claim is not explicitly made by the brand.

Is Kilchoman Sanaig Cask Strength 2026 a biological whisky?

Based on the information available to us, we can conclude that this Kilchoman Sanaig Cask Strength 2026 whisky from Kilchoman is not an organic product.

How do I get started on Scotch whisky?

Many people assume that a more expensive bottle of Scotch whisky is automatically better. It sounds logical: the higher the price, the better the quality. But in reality, the difference between a bottle of a few tens and one worth thousands of euros is rarely purely in the taste. What you pay has much more to do with age, scarcity, marketing and reputation than with what you actually taste in your glass.

To understand this properly, it helps to look at Scotch in different "levels". Each level tells you something about what you are drinking and, more importantly, what you are paying for, but not every epicurean goes through all these levels.

You can read all about it in our blog post Why an expensive Scotch doesn't necessarily taste better - the different levels of Scotch.
