Flavour notes

The aroma brings rich sweet spice and mature Arran malt, supported by peat smoke and ripe citrus fruit. On the palate it is warming, balanced and generous, carrying the fresh style associated with Arran 10 Year Old into a smoky tail.

A gentle sweetness sits beneath the spiced side, while the layer of sweet smoke adds intensity. The finish is long, persistent and full of presence.

Product info about Machrie Moor 10 Y

Machrie Moor 10 Y is an important expression in Arran's peated whisky story. Machrie Moor first appeared in 2010 as Arran's first peated whisky, and this release gives the range its first age-stated reference: at least 10 years old, with the familiar 20 ppm peat level.

It matured entirely in first fill bourbon barrels and was bottled at 46%, with natural colour and without chill filtration. That keeps a clear connection to Arran's fresh house style, while adding the spiced, smoky side that defines Machrie Moor.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, we see this as more than just another release in the range. It is bottled once a year in very limited quantities, and the combination of age statement, peat smoke and Arran character gives it a strong place among customers who follow this distillery closely. About ARRAN

Arran Whisky is made at the still fairly young Lochranza Distillery. The first plans for it were made in 1993 and the first alcohol ran out of the stills there in 1995. That means they will celebrate their 30th anniversary in 2025, hopefully resulting in a nice 30yo? Stay tuned for that news!

Lochranza Distillery can be found in the village of the same name in the north of the Isle of Arran. That's on the west coast of Scotland, a stone's throw from Glasgow. It's a popular weekend trip from Glasgow, because on Arran you'll find a sort of miniature version of Scotland. A short distance away (the road around the whole island is about 80 km in total) you'll find mountains, valleys, beautiful green meadows, beautiful beaches and everything that makes Scotland so enticing for foodies: fresh produce from the land and sea, and whisky, of course. The distillery's location among the mountains in the north of the island is unquestionably spectacular. So must have thought the eagles who were already living there when the distillery was built. They have since become part of the identity of Arran whisky and you can observe them on site to your heart's content.

The whisky made by Lochranza is much loved. It is characterised by a distinctly fruity character that appeals to novice tasters and experienced whisky lovers alike. The basic range includes whiskies that can now be called modern classics such as the 10yo, the Quarter Cask and the Sherry Cask. All of them are tasty, accessible and affordable whiskies of high quality, carefully blended from the casks aged in their warehouses. The Machrie Moor, the lightly peated version made at Lochranza, is also a favourite of many, but will no longer be produced from 2026, as the group has set up a second distillery in the south of the island making only peated whisky (Lagg Distillery).

Frequently asked questions

What kind of whisky is Machrie Moor 10 Y?

Machrie Moor 10 Y is a single malt whisky.

The word 'single' causes some confusion for many. A single malt is nothing more and nothing less than a product from a single distillery. So it has nothing to do with a single cask or even casks of the same age.

Single malt whisky is made from malted barley and distilled in the famous copper pot stills, the distinctive copper stills.

Is Machrie Moor 10 Y a no age statement whisky (NAS)?

No, Machrie Moor 10 Y is not a no age statement (NAS) whisky. The label explicitly states an age and that age represents the youngest whisky found in the bottle (or in the blend).

Is Machrie Moor 10 Y a single cask whisky?

No, Machrie Moor 10 Y is not a single cask whisky.

Is Machrie Moor 10 Y a whisky at cask strength?

No, Machrie Moor 10 Y is not whisky at cask strength.

Is Machrie Moor 10 Y suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Machrie Moor 10 Y is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular whisky combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced whisky-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Machrie Moor 10 Y might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is Machrie Moor 10 Y a popular whisky?

Absolutely! Machrie Moor 10 Y is a whisky that is currently included in our Top 100. This top contains the 100 products that were sold most often in our shops over the past 12 months, which is a good indicator of the product's stable popularity over a longer period of time.

Is Machrie Moor 10 Y een goede keuze voor mij?

This Machrie Moor 10 Y can be a whisky one that suits you if you like a whisky with a smoky character. Indeed, the peat flavour is quite prominent in the flavour profile.

However, we recommend that you also look at the rest of the flavour profile, as this peatiness is of course only one part of the overall character of this whisky.

Is Machrie Moor 10 Y a tarred whisky?

Yes, Machrie Moor 10 Y is a whisky with a reasonably peated flavour profile: the smokiness of this whisky will be unmistakable with every sip. However, it is more moderate than in the most intensely peated whisky.

Peaty, smoky or peat is a typical flavour associated with a particular type of whisky. It is a flavour you have to (learn to) love.

Is Machrie Moor 10 Y a spicy whisky?

Yes, Machrie Moor 10 Y is a whisky with a fairly spicy flavour profile: the spiciness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

The spiciness of a spirit can come about in different ways.

  • In whisky, the spicy notes mainly arise during the maturation process in wooden casks. The type of wood used (e.g. American oak, European oak) and whether the casks have been used before (e.g. sherry casks) have a big influence on the spiciness of the whisky that comes out of them.
  • With rum, the spicy notes can also come from the barrels used, but in addition there is also a separate class of "Spiced rum" where extra spices are added.
  • Gin has a much shorter production cycle and therefore does not usually get its spiciness from wood. Spicy notes in a gin are usually the direct result of the botanicals used to "colour" the gin and give it its own identity.
Is Machrie Moor 10 Y a fruity whisky?

On its own, yes, but Machrie Moor 10 Y is a whisky with only a slightly fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this whisky is hidden in the flavour profile, balanced with the other parts of the profile.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruit and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Do you drink Machrie Moor 10 Y pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Machrie Moor 10 Y whisky best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to whisky. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your whisky, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does Machrie Moor 10 Y have a high alcohol content?

The alcohol content of this Machrie Moor 10 Y is higher than what you would expect from an average whisky expect. While not extremely exceptional, a whisky of around 46% is somewhat rarer anyway. Most whisky is usually closer to 40%.

Is Machrie Moor 10 Y an independent bottling?

No, Machrie Moor 10 Y is an official bottling of Arran.

Is Machrie Moor 10 Y suitable for an Irish Coffee?

To make an Irish Coffee according to the rules of the art, you need an Irish whiskey. Since you are going to mix it with coffee and whipped cream, we recommend using a good, but not overpriced whiskey. This Machrie Moor 10 Y is a whiskey, but because this whiskey comes from Scotland it is not the best choice to make a "real" Irish Coffee.

Did you know that the first Irish Coffee was invented in 1942 by bartender Joe Sheridan? He was working at the airport in Foynes, in the west of Ireland. The barman saw some tired passengers and figured they needed coffee with something special. To perk them up, he poured them coffee with a dash of whiskey mixed in and some coffee on top. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridon replied, "No, my friend, this is Irish Coffee." And so it was.

Is Machrie Moor 10 Y vegan?

According to the data currently available to us, we cannot state with certainty that this product is vegan and this claim is not explicitly made by the brand.

Is Machrie Moor 10 Y a biological whisky?

Based on the information available to us, we can conclude that this Machrie Moor 10 Y whisky from Arran is not an organic product.

How do I get started on Scotch whisky?

Many people assume that a more expensive bottle of Scotch whisky is automatically better. It sounds logical: the higher the price, the better the quality. But in reality, the difference between a bottle of a few tens and one worth thousands of euros is rarely purely in the taste. What you pay has much more to do with age, scarcity, marketing and reputation than with what you actually taste in your glass.

To understand this properly, it helps to look at Scotch in different "levels". Each level tells you something about what you are drinking and, more importantly, what you are paying for, but not every epicurean goes through all these levels.

You can read all about it in our blog post Why an expensive Scotch doesn't necessarily taste better - the different levels of Scotch.
