About FORTALEZA
Although Tequila Fortaleza has only existed as a brand since 2005, they already have more than 150 years of history. Don Cenobio founded his first distillery (La Perseverancia) in 1873 in Jalisco. He was the first to export tequila to the USA and was also the first to use steam to cook the agave instead of cooking it in an earthen pot. Don Javier, the third generation in the distillery, would from the 1970s strive to protect tequila as a product, something which would eventually succeed in 1996. Fortaleza came into the possession of the family in the 1960s and was produced on a small scale, but the distillery was closed in 1968 because it was not efficient enough. The grandson of Don Javier, Don Guillermo, would later renovate and reopen Fortaleza, as a tribute to the family history.
