Fortaleza Tequila - A story of tradition and craftsmanship

Fortaleza Tequila - A story of tradition and craftsmanship

In the heart of the Mexican state of Jalisco, in the town that gave its name to the country's most famous spirit, you will find a distillery where time seems to stand still. Tequila Fortaleza is not a name coined by a marketing agency, but the result of a family tradition nurtured by the Sauza family for five generations.

At the helm today is Guillermo Sauza, a man determined to preserve the soul of tequila as his ancestors once intended. In a world where speed and efficiency often prevail, he chose to stay true to the old methods - while respecting craft and nature.

Time as a secret ingredient

The making of Fortaleza starts with the agave. The large, heavy hearts - the piñas - are slowly steamed in a small brick oven for no less than 35 hours. No rush, just patience. Then they are ground in the traditional way with a Tahona, a millstone made of volcanic stone that loosens the sugars from the agave.

The sweet pulp then goes into pine barrels, where fermentation does its work naturally. And then comes the distillation: not in giant industrial boilers, but in small copper alambics of 400 and 250 litres. The result is a production of barely 2,000 litres a week - a fraction of the big players - but a tequila with character, which carries every step of the process.

Even the bottles breathe tradition. They are hand-blown and sealed with handmade corks. No detail is left to chance.

Different expressions

There are different expressions within the Fortaleza range. They are often small, limited editions that become available on our market by mouth, and sometimes they are limited editions that are only available once and for a short time.

Fortaleza Blanco - The pure soul of agave

The Blanco is perhaps the most direct way to get to know Fortaleza. It is distilled to 46% and then subtly diluted to perfectly balance the flavours. In the glass, you will discover both vegetal and sweet notes from the agave, complemented by fresh hints of pineapple, olives and lime. The finish is slightly dry, but remains soft and elegant. This is tequila as it is meant to be - without salt, without lime, just pure.

Fortaleza Still Strength - Intense power

For those who like it even more intense, there is the Still Strength: tequila as it flows straight from the kettle. Unfiltered, powerful and full of character. The aroma opens with ripe fruit, fried agave and green olives, then the flavour is enhanced by spicy pepper and vegetal freshness. A sip of this expression is like standing among the agave fields of Jalisco yourself - pure, intense and unadulterated.

Fortaleza Reposado - Subtle maturation

The Reposado gets a short but meaningful rest of 4 to 6 months in ex-bourbon barrels of American oak. That period gives it just enough extra layers without losing the freshness of the agave. Aromatically you taste citrus, caramel, butter, baked agave and spices, while on the palate flavours of vanilla, apple and cinnamon emerge. The finish is long, spicy and firm - a tequila that exudes balance and refinement.

Fortaleza Añejo - Ripe refinement

The Añejo takes more time. No less than 18 months of maturation in ex-bourbon barrels give this expression a deep, complex personality. On the nose, you'll find aromas of caramel, vanilla, toffee and cooked agave, intertwined with a subtle floral fruitiness. On the palate, a rich layer builds up, culminating in an explosion of toffee, citrus, nuts and even chattering nuts. The finish is long, full and luxurious - a real treat for those who appreciate patience.

Fortaleza Winter Blend - Limited Edition

In addition to its classic expressions, Fortaleza also releases Winter Blends, a series of special editions that combine the character of tequila with seasonal nuances. These limited editions are ideal for discovering how the rich flavours of agave blend with subtle winter notes, such as soft spices, light sweetness or a hint of chocolate and caramel. Available exclusively in small quantities, Winter Blends often disappear from shelves at lightning speed, making each bottle a small collector's item. Perfect for celebrating the holidays or to end a special evening with, pure or in a sophisticated cocktail.

For the Fortaleza Winter Blend 2021, Fortaleza has chosen a Tequila Reposado in ex Marsala barrels! Maturation: 6 months in American oak and then 10 months in French oak previously used for maturing Marsala wine.

The Fortaleza Winter Blend 2022 was composed of three components: a reposado matured for 6 months in American oak (ex-bourbon barrels), a reposado matured in French oak (ex-Oloroso sherry barrels), with a maturation time of 5 months in first-fill and 4 months in second-fill, and finally a a reposado matured in Hungarian oak (ex-Tokaji wine barrels), with a maturation time of 5 months in first-fill and 4 months in second-fill.

For the Fortaleza Winter Blend 2023, the tequila maestro chose barrels made from different types of oak, including American, French and Hungarian oak, which have previously been used to age top-quality spirits such as Charanda, Oloroso sherry and Tokaj. This complex blending and ageing process gives the tequila incomparable richness and depth.

Fortaleza Winter Blend 2024 was a robust yet delicate craft tequila, aged for 6 months in used American whiskey barrels and 10 months in new French oak barrels. Presented at cask strength for a pure experience, it offered a warmth and complexity reminiscent of winter nights.

A glass full of history - and scarcity

Tequila Fortaleza is more than a drink. It is a tribute to a family legacy, a symbol of craft and a reminder of how tequila was once meant to be. No shots, no gimmicks - but a spirit that you drink quietly and purely.

And that makes it all the more special that these bottles are only sparsely available. Due to their small production and global success, Fortaleza's expressions often sell out quickly. Those who can get their hands on one will therefore have something special in their hands.

Take a sip, close your eyes and you are standing among the agave fields of Jalisco, with the sun on your face and the smell of fried agave in the air. That's Fortaleza: authentic, intense and unforgettable.
