Mackmyra 12 Years Tolv comes from the Moment range, the series Mackmyra reserves for some of its most exclusive bottlings. These releases are built from only a small number of casks, selected by Master Blender Angela d'Orazio when they stand clearly apart. Tolv is especially meaningful in that context: at the time of release, it was the oldest whisky Mackmyra had ever bottled.
Distilled in 2004, this Swedish single malt spent 12 years maturing, which is reflected in the name Tolv. Part of its story lies in the Bodäs mine, Mackmyra's best-known warehouse, 50 metres underground. Mackmyra Karibien is a Swedish single malt that follows on from a much-appreciated limited Mackmyra release from 2016, finished in ex-Plantation rum casks from Jamaica and Barbados. Karibien returns to that same Caribbean-inspired idea, but with a little more layering in the cask selection.
Rum casks from Jamaica and Barbados remain central to the whisky, while a small portion of ex-Oloroso casks and local ex-cherry wine casks adds extra depth. The result is a fruit-led Mackmyra with gentle spice and a richer sweet edge. The casks used are between 8 and 12 years old, giving the whisky a mature feel without carrying an age statement on the label.
