Flavour notes

The aroma opens with an inviting note of almond paste, lifted by the acidity and freshness of citrus zest. On the palate, the profile turns more roasted, with toast, toasted wood and grilled coconut flakes alongside orange peel and kumquat.

The finish is woody and firm, with subtle traces of mango and liquorice lingering behind. Its cask strength gives the rum real intensity, while the fruit, toasted notes and spice remain clearly present.

Product info about Ricci Cancer 50cl

Ricci Cancer 50cl is a high-strength molasses rum from Famille Ricci, built around mature Australian rum from the Beenleigh distillery. Distilled in 2007 in a pot still and aged for 17 years entirely in bourbon barrels, it has a clear sense of depth and concentration from the outset.

At 65.2% ABV, this is a cask strength bottling presented without additives. That matters here, because the rum is meant to be tasted in a direct, unpolished way, with its natural power and maturity intact. At Drankenshop Broekmans, we place a bottle like this among the rums for drinkers who enjoy strength, age and a more outspoken style rather than easy sweetness.

With the final bottles now indicated, Ricci Cancer also has the feel of a limited selection rather than a permanent release. It brings together toasted wood, citrus lift, grilled coconut and deeper notes in a rum that remains firmly structured and expressive.

About FAMILLE RICCI

The production process of Famille Ricci rum is meticulous. It all begins with the careful selection of the best already distilled spirits from various regions. These spirits are then aged a second time in the family`s casks. These spirits are then aged a second time in the family`s casks, which are carefully selected for their different capacities and wood types. Thanks to the collaboration with the cooperage of Navarra, known for its exceptional craftsmanship, the rum acquires unique nuances and aromas. The blending of the rum is a crucial stage, in which the distilled spirits reach full maturity before being combined to create rich, complex flavor profiles. The reduction of the rum is carried out with precision and patience, until the desired degrees are reached, thus preserving the integrity and balance of the cuvées. Finally, the bottling is done by hand in the family winery, ensuring total quality control at every stage of the process. But beyond the technical side, it is the passion that drives the Ricci family. Their greatest wish is to share the delightful tasting moments offered by their cuvées with the world. In short, Famille Ricci embodies the essence of craftsmanship and passion for rum. Their story is one of a family dedicated to creating unique and delicious moments, through exceptional vintages that celebrate the authenticity and diversity of terroirs around the world.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of rum is Ricci Cancer 50cl?

Ricci Cancer 50cl is a mélasse rum .

Molasses is fermented and distilled, after which the rum can be aged in barrels. Molasses is a by-product of sugar production and contains many sugars that are converted into alcohol and complex flavourings during fermentation.

Is Ricci Cancer 50cl a no age statement rum (NAS)?

Yes, Ricci Cancer 50cl is a no age statement (NAS) rum. But what exactly does that mean?

According to the rules, when an age is stated on the bottle, it must always be the youngest whisky in the blend and not the age that is the most represented percentage-wise in the blend. A producer will therefore consciously choose not to state an age on his bottle in two cases: when an old whisky is blended with a small proportion of younger whisky, or when young whisky is blended with a proportion of older whisky. In the first case, he does not want to put a young age on his bottle if his blend contains mainly older whisky, and in the second case, from a marketing point of view it is more interesting to go out with that particle of older whisky.

Is Ricci Cancer 50cl a single cask rum?

No, Ricci Cancer 50cl is not a single cask rum.

Is Ricci Cancer 50cl a rum at cask strength?

Yes, Ricci Cancer 50cl is a rum cask strength. A cask strength rum is not diluted with water before bottling, but goes straight from the cask into the bottle and therefore retains the alcohol percentage during/after cask maturation.

One of the advantages of a cask-strength whisky is that, as a drinker, you can decide how strong you like your whisky by diluting or not diluting it with a little water yourself according to your preference, instead of the producer having already done this for you.

Is Ricci Cancer 50cl suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Ricci Cancer 50cl is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular rum combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced rum-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Ricci Cancer 50cl might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is Ricci Cancer 50cl een goede keuze voor mij?

This Ricci Cancer 50cl can be a rum that suits you if you like a rum with a spicy character. Indeed, this spiciness is quite emphatic in the flavour profile.

However, we recommend that you also check out the rest of the flavour profile, as it is of course only one part of the overall character of this rum.

Is Ricci Cancer 50cl a spicy rum?

Yes, Ricci Cancer 50cl is a rum with a fairly spicy flavour profile: the spiciness of this rum will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

The spiciness of a spirit can come about in different ways.

  • In whisky, the spicy notes mainly arise during the maturation process in wooden casks. The type of wood used (e.g. American oak, European oak) and whether the casks have been used before (e.g. sherry casks) have a big influence on the spiciness of the whisky that comes out of them.
  • With rum, the spicy notes can also come from the barrels used, but in addition there is also a separate class of "Spiced rum" where extra spices are added.
  • Gin has a much shorter production cycle and therefore does not usually get its spiciness from wood. Spicy notes in a gin are usually the direct result of the botanicals used to "colour" the gin and give it its own identity.
Is Ricci Cancer 50cl a fruity rum?

On its own, yes, but Ricci Cancer 50cl is a rum with only a slightly fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this rum is hidden in the flavour profile, balanced with the other parts of the profile.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruit and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Is Ricci Cancer 50cl a sweet rum?

By itself, yes, but the sweetness in this Ricci Cancer 50cl rum is only slightly present in the flavour profile.

Sweet rum is usually the most accessible version. Because that pronounced sweetness is missing here, it may be a rum that does not strike a mainstream chord with everyone.

Do you drink Ricci Cancer 50cl pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Ricci Cancer 50cl rum best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to rum. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your rum, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does Ricci Cancer 50cl have a high alcohol content?

Rum of more than 52% is rather rare. Often, such a high alcohol content is due to the fact that it is a cask strength rum (a rum cask strength): the rum in that case is not diluted before bottling so it goes into the bottle at a higher alcohol content. Rum with a high alcohol content often benefits from a few drops of water to release the aromas and make the alcohol less predominant in the glass, and in itself is also fine for use in stronger cocktails.

Is Ricci Cancer 50cl an independent bottling?

No, Ricci Cancer 50cl is an official bottling of Famille Ricci.

Is Ricci Cancer 50cl a solera rum?

No, Ricci Cancer 50cl is not produced according to the solera system.

Is Ricci Cancer 50cl suitable for making a Dark 'n Stormy cocktail?

The "Dark 'n Stormy" cocktail is a protected trademark of Gosling Brothers Ltd. According to official rules, a cocktail may therefore only be called Dark 'N Stormy (with one apostrophe) if it is made with Gosling's Rum and ginger beer.

Since Gosling only registered the name with single apostrophe, the same cocktail is also described elsewhere as a Dark 'n' Stormy (with double apostrophe) or as a Safe Harbor in an attempt to get out from under the trademark and licensing problems.

If you don't mind the official designation and want to make a cocktail based on the recipe of the official Dark 'n Stormy, this Ricci Cancer 50cl is definitely a good choice. To make an official, correct Dark 'n Stormy, however, you need Gosling's Black Seal rum.

Is Ricci Cancer 50cl vegan?

According to the data currently available to us, we cannot state with certainty that this product is vegan and this claim is not explicitly made by the brand.

Is Ricci Cancer 50cl a biological rum?

Based on the information available to us, we can conclude that this Ricci Cancer 50cl rum from Famille Ricci is not an organic product.
