Schloss Johannisberg Orangelack Riesling Kabinett 2023 is a Rheingau Riesling with a very specific sense of place: the Schloss Johannisberg vineyard surrounding the castle in Johannisberg. The estate has been fully devoted to Riesling since 1720, and the Orangelack name refers to its historic use of different wax seal colours to mark quality and ripeness levels.The 2023 vintage was hand-picked in the first week of harvest from the central part of Johannisberg. Whole bunches were gently pressed in a basket press, followed by fermentation in stainless steel. The wine then spent six months on fine lees in a large 1,200-litre wooden cask made from oak from the estate itself. That combination keeps the wine precise and fresh, while adding a measured sense of depth.
Within the Riesling selection at Drankenshop Broekmans, Orangelack stands out as more than a regular Kabinett. It is positioned above the standard Kabinett level in the Schloss Johannisberg range and shows a refined balance between ripe fruit sweetness, lively acidity and a cool, stony line. The strong critical recognition for this release reinforces the impression of a Kabinett made with real ambition.
At 10% alcohol, it remains graceful and light on its feet, yet there is plenty of aromatic detail. It is a natural match for seafood, white fish, scallops, sashimi, ceviche and dishes with gentle spice. Roasted pumpkin with fresh herbs and chilli flakes also fits the wine's mix of fruit sweetness, freshness and herbal nuance.

Schloss Johannisberg is a historic German winery, located in the Rheingau region, one of the oldest and most esteemed wine areas in Germany. The estate itself, which stands high above the Rhine, is often cited as the place where the first true Riesling monocépage was cultivated. The vineyards of Schloss Johannisberg have been in use for over 900 years and are known for their steep slopes with mineral-rich soils, which produce characteristic and elegant Riesling. Notably, the estate has been closely linked to the development of quality wines in Germany over time, and it was one of the first to systematically experiment with Spätlese and Auslese. The focus is entirely on Riesling, which is reflected in the wide range of dry, semi-dry and sweet wines.
