Product info about Depaz Cuvee Papao

Depaz Cuvee Papao is a rum from Martinique with a clear sense of origin. Its foundation is sugar cane juice, placing it in a more defined style than a broadly generic rum category and giving the bottle a direct link to its raw material.

The main points of interest are its traditional column distillation and maturation in bourbon cask. The supplied information does not provide specific tasting descriptors, so the focus remains on what is known: a Martinique rum built around cane juice, shaped by cask ageing and bottled at a confident 48% ABV.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, this is the kind of rum we would point out to someone looking beyond familiar sweet or heavy rum styles. Depaz Cuvee Papao has a clear production identity, a recognisable origin and enough strength in the bottle to make its presence felt.

About DEPAZ

Depaz Distillery is one of the smallest rum distilleries in Martinique. You will find it in a green oasis at the foot of Mont Pelée. At Depaz, rum is still made as it was in the past, with an old steam engine. At the heart of the distillery, this machine produces the energy needed to power the machines that grind the sugar cane and the stills themselves.

The start of Depaz's story was in 1651, in a then farm on the La Montagne estate. which was founded by Jacques Duparquet, the island's governor. It originally grew tobacco and raised cattle, but soon switched to planting sugar cane. A distillery also followed. Many families were employed here, including Victor Depaz's. As the distillery grew, the town of Saint Pierre also grew to become the largest rum port in the world, earning it the nickname 'The Little Paris of the Antilles'.

That growth was abruptly ended on 8 May 1902 by a massive eruption of Mont Pelée, which wiped the entire town off the map. Victor Depaz was studying in Bordeaux at the time. His entire family was killed in that eruption, and all possessions were destroyed. Victor returned and 15 years later, on 8 May 1917, he started a new distillery and sugar cane plantation on the flanks of Mont Pelée. There he also built a copy of the Périnelle, his childhood home, which would soon be known as Depaz Castle. There he lived from 1922 with his 11 children, some of whom would later also take over the distillery.

Is Depaz Cuvee Papao a no age statement rum (NAS)?

No, Depaz Cuvee Papao is not a no age statement (NAS) rum. The label explicitly states an age and that age represents the youngest rum found in the bottle (or in the blend).

No, Depaz Cuvee Papao is not rum at cask strength.

Is Depaz Cuvee Papao suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Depaz Cuvee Papao is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular rum combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced rum-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Depaz Cuvee Papao might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is Depaz Cuvee Papao een goede keuze voor mij?

This Depaz Cuvee Papao can be a rum one that suits you if you like a rum with a floral character. Indeed, this florality is quite emphatic in the flavour profile.

However, we recommend that you also look at the rest of the flavour profile, as this florality is of course only one part of the overall character of this rum.

Is Depaz Cuvee Papao a spicy rum?

Yes, Depaz Cuvee Papao is a rum with a fairly spicy flavour profile: the spiciness of this rum will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

The spiciness of a spirit can come about in different ways.

  • In whisky, the spicy notes mainly arise during the maturation process in wooden casks. The type of wood used (e.g. American oak, European oak) and whether the casks have been used before (e.g. sherry casks) have a big influence on the spiciness of the whisky that comes out of them.
  • With rum, the spicy notes can also come from the barrels used, but in addition there is also a separate class of "Spiced rum" where extra spices are added.
  • Gin has a much shorter production cycle and therefore does not usually get its spiciness from wood. Spicy notes in a gin are usually the direct result of the botanicals used to "colour" the gin and give it its own identity.
Is Depaz Cuvee Papao a fruity rum?

Yes, Depaz Cuvee Papao is a rum with a moderately fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this rum will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruit and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Is Depaz Cuvee Papao a sweet rum?

By itself, yes, but the sweetness in this Depaz Cuvee Papao rum is only slightly present in the flavour profile.

Sweet rum is usually the most accessible version. Because that pronounced sweetness is missing here, it may be a rum that does not strike a mainstream chord with everyone.

Do you drink Depaz Cuvee Papao pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Depaz Cuvee Papao rum best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to rum. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your rum, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does Depaz Cuvee Papao have a high alcohol content?

The alcohol content of this Depaz Cuvee Papao is higher than what you would expect from an average rum expect. While not extremely exceptional, a rum of around 46% is somewhat rarer anyway. Most rum is usually closer to 40%.

Is Depaz Cuvee Papao an independent bottling?

No, Depaz Cuvee Papao is an official bottling of Depaz.

Is Depaz Cuvee Papao a solera rum?

No, Depaz Cuvee Papao is not produced according to the solera system.

Is Depaz Cuvee Papao suitable for making a Dark 'n Stormy cocktail?

The "Dark 'n Stormy" cocktail is a protected trademark of Gosling Brothers Ltd. According to official rules, a cocktail may therefore only be called Dark 'N Stormy (with one apostrophe) if it is made with Gosling's Rum and ginger beer.

Since Gosling only registered the name with single apostrophe, the same cocktail is also described elsewhere as a Dark 'n' Stormy (with double apostrophe) or as a Safe Harbor in an attempt to get out from under the trademark and licensing problems.

If you don't mind the official designation and want to make a cocktail based on the recipe of the official Dark 'n Stormy, this Depaz Cuvee Papao is definitely a good choice. To make an official, correct Dark 'n Stormy, however, you need Gosling's Black Seal rum.

Is Depaz Cuvee Papao vegan?

According to the data currently available to us, we cannot state with certainty that this product is vegan and this claim is not explicitly made by the brand.

Is Depaz Cuvee Papao a biological rum?

Based on the information available to us, we can conclude that this Depaz Cuvee Papao rum from Depaz is not an organic product.
