Chateau Cos Labory 2022 is a red Bordeaux from Saint-Estèphe in the Médoc, made as the estate's Grand Vin. Its status as a Cinquième Grand Cru Classé from the 1855 classification gives it historical weight, but the more immediate interest lies in its origin: the core vineyard parcels sit on the Cos hill, with deep gravel, clay and a limestone-rich subsoil.The 2022 blend is led by Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, supported by Petit Verdot and a small share of Cabernet Franc. The grapes were hand-harvested and selected, then fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats. Ageing took place in French oak barriques, 50% of them new. For this vintage, 10% press wine was added to the blend for the first time, a detail that fits the wine's structured Saint-Estèphe personality.
There is also a particular historical context to this vintage. Chateau Cos Labory changed hands in 2023, when Michel Reybier, owner of Cos d'Estournel, acquired the estate. Château Cos Labory is a classic wine estate from Bordeaux, located in the prestigious Saint-Estèphe appellation on the left bank of the Gironde. The estate derives its name from the hillside (cos means pebble hill in the local dialect) and from François Labory, one of the former owners from the 19th century. The domain covers about 18 hectares and is mainly planted with cabernet sauvignon, merlot and a smaller proportion of cabernet franc, typical grape varieties for this region. Since the 1950s, it has been owned by the Audoy family, who aim for a consistent, traditional style in which structure and elegance come together. Château Cos Labory has been classified as Cinquième Grand Cru Classé since 1855, a status that refers to the historic classification of the best Bordeaux wines. The wine is often characterized by a robust structure, dark fruit notes and potential to age beautifully. Each year, the house produces a Grand Vin along with a second wine, usually somewhat more accessible in character.
