Flavour notes

The aromatic profile brings together ripe red and dark fruit: raspberry, strawberry, black cherry, cassis, plum, mulberry and dark berries. Behind the fruit are floral violet notes, mint, spice, liquorice, chocolate, sandalwood, tobacco and a light earthy touch, with graphite-like accents and a hint of toast.

On the palate it is medium-bodied, juicy and fresh, with fine to supple tannins and a silky, polished texture. The finish returns to fruit, spice and the influence of new oak.

Product info about Virginie De Valandraud 2021

Virginie De Valandraud 2021 is a red Saint-Émilion Grand Cru closely connected to Château Valandraud, the estate of Jean-Luc Thunevin and Murielle Andraud. Although it is positioned as the château's second wine, Virginie De Valandraud has gained an identity of its own, supported by dedicated parcels within the Thunevin vineyards. The cuvée is named after their daughter Virginie, adding a personal touch to the story behind the bottle.

The 2021 blend is led by Merlot, with Cabernet Franc and a small share of Cabernet Sauvignon completing the composition. Rather than presenting the weight of a warmer vintage, this year shows a fresher and more finely built side of Saint-Émilion. The growing season was wet and demanded careful vineyard work, and the resulting style places emphasis on red fruit, freshness and polished tannins.

Ageing in new oak barriques for around twenty months plays an important role in the wine's character. The oak influence is present, with toast and structure, yet the wine remains centred on fruit, spice and the elegance of the vintage. At Drankenshop Broekmans, we see this as a Bordeaux for customers who appreciate Saint-Émilion Grand Cru with estate pedigree, but also a more approachable shape than the most powerful years.

These are the last bottles in our selection, so availability is naturally limited.

About CH DE VALANDRAUD

Château de Valandraud is a relatively young winery from the Bordeaux region and was founded in 1989 by Jean-Luc Thunevin and Murielle Andraud. This estate, located in the prestigious Saint-Émilion appellation, has quickly built up a remarkable reputation, thanks in part to its small production and the personal approach of the owners. The first vineyard covered less than one hectare, but grew over the years through smart acquisitions and dedicated work in both the vineyard and the cellar. Valandraud is often seen as a pioneer of the so-called garagiste wines, small, often artisanal productions that stand out from the traditional châteaux. In 2012, the wine was awarded the status of Premier Grand Cru Classé B, underscoring its increasing appreciation from the trade press and wine drinkers. The grapes used consist mainly of Merlot, as well as Cabernet Franc and small amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Carmenère. The style of Valandraud is known for its rich, concentrated character with striking fruity notes and an elegant structure. In addition to the main wine, the estate also produces a second wine and several other labels. Château de Valandraud is now firmly established in the world of high-quality Bordeaux wines and perfectly demonstrates how passion, innovation, and attention can lead to remarkable results in a relatively short period of time.
