Nicolas Catena Zapata 2020 is the flagship red wine of Catena Zapata in Mendoza. It is built as a nod to the historic Bordeaux blend, when Malbec played a more prominent role than it does in modern Bordeaux. The 2020 blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Malbec gives the wine a classical frame, while its high-altitude Uco Valley origin keeps it firmly rooted in Argentina.Fruit for this wine comes from sites including Adrianna Vineyard in Gualtallary and Nicasia Vineyard in Paraje Altamira. Their limestone, gravel, large stones, sand and loam help explain why the wine is described not just in terms of concentration, but also through freshness, tension and a clear mineral thread.
The 2020 vintage at Catena Zapata was very dry, with reduced yields and an early harvest. In these warm, dry conditions, Cabernet Franc played an important role in preserving freshness. Fermentation took place in small oak barrels, concrete and stainless steel, followed by 18 months in French oak barrels.

Catena Zapata is a winery from Argentina that has its roots in the Mendoza region, at the foot of the Andes mountains. The family business was officially founded in 1902 by the Italian immigrant Nicola Catena and is now led by the third and fourth generation, including Laura Catena, an influential name within the Argentine wine world.
