Flavour notes

All three vintages share the garnet colour and orange reflections of mature Barolo, yet each brings its own emphasis. The 2009 shows peaty tones, fresh fruit, floral nuances, white petals and earthy root-like accents, carried by freshness and a menthol note on the finish.

The 2011 has a darker aromatic register, with tar, petroleum-like notes, cinchona bark and red fruit. On the palate it is broad, with soft enveloping tannins, a long finish and a saline touch. The 2012 moves towards liquorice, marked freshness and balance, ending with a slightly iodine-like, salty impression.

Borgogno suggests serving at 18 °C. With mature Barolo of this kind, careful opening and slow decanting shortly before serving can be worthwhile, particularly if a little sediment has formed.

Product info about Borgogno Barolo Cannubi Riserva 2009 2011 2012 3x75cl

The Borgogno Barolo Cannubi Riserva Collection brings together three vintages of the same wine: 2009, 2011 and 2012, one 75 cl bottle of each. It is a vertical set built around Cannubi, one of Barolo's historic vineyard areas, released by Borgogno as Riserva only in selected years.

Each bottle shares the same identity: Barolo DOCG Riserva from Piedmont, made entirely from Nebbiolo, grown on calcareous clay-marl soils with sand and a pronounced presence of silt at around 290 to 315 metres altitude. The winemaking follows a classical path, with spontaneous fermentation, extended maceration and four years in large Slavonian oak casks, followed by further ageing in bottle. The emphasis is on Nebbiolo, place and maturity rather than overt oak influence.

The pleasure of the set lies in the vintage dialogue. The 2009 reflects a year that found its balance after a long dry and stable period late in the season. The 2011 was warmer and earlier, producing grapes with strong tannin, good colour and an expressive aromatic profile. The 2012 brought lower yields, healthy grapes and the structure Borgogno associates with long ageing.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, this is the kind of collection we like for customers who enjoy tasting with attention: three mature Cannubi Riserva Barolos, presented as a gift set and now down to the last bottles. It is less about opening one bottle in isolation and more about discovering how vintage, vineyard and time shape Nebbiolo.

About BORGOGNO

Borgogno is one of the older and more recognizable wine names from the Italian region of Piemonte, with roots going back to the year 1761. The winery is especially connected to the town of Barolo, where it has been located from the beginning in the heart of the world-famous Barolo wine tradition. Throughout the centuries, Borgogno has helped define the style and character of classic Barolo wines, with a strong emphasis on traditional methods such as the use of large Slavonian oak barrels for aging. The vineyards of Borgogno are situated on well-chosen hills around Barolo, where the composition of soil and climate is ideal for the Nebbiolo grape. The range consists not only of Barolo, but also includes other local wines such as Dolcetto, Barbera, and Freisa, allowing the house to showcase the broad palette of the Piemonte region. Since 2008, Borgogno has been in the hands of the Farinetti family, who have preserved the classic character of the wines with respect for local traditions and nature. In this way, Borgogno remains a beloved choice for those who wish to discover the typical wines from Piemonte and the expression of authentic Italian winemaking tradition.
