Product info about Clos Apalta 2020
Clos Apalta 2020 is the grand vin of Clos Apalta in Chile's Apalta Valley, built around Carménère with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and a small proportion of Petit Verdot. This is a serious red wine from a vineyard described by the estate as an amphitheatre of old, often ungrafted vines, rooted in soils with granite, quartz and clay.The 2020 vintage was far from straightforward. Drought, heat, frost events and the wider disruption of the pandemic meant that harvesting had to be carried out parcel by parcel. The dry conditions did, however, bring healthy grapes, with high sugar levels, firm tannins and unexpectedly marked acidity in the must. That background helps explain the wine's combination of power and structure.
Winemaking followed the same concentrated direction: five to six weeks of maceration with manual pigeage, fermentation in French oak vats and 27 months of maturation in French oak barrels, most of them new. The wine was bottled unfined and unfiltered. At Drankenshop Broekmans, the last bottles of this vintage stand out as a deeply worked Chilean red with notable critical recognition, including 99 points from James Suckling according to the estate's technical sheet.
