Product info about Chateau Gazin 2020
Chateau Gazin 2020 is the grand vin of Château Gazin in Pomerol, Bordeaux. It is a dry red wine with a strongly Merlot-led composition: 91.6% Merlot and 8.4% Cabernet Sauvignon. For the first time, no Cabernet Franc was used in the grand vin; the estate's Cabernet Franc went instead into the second wine, L'Hospitalet de Gazin.The 2020 vintage gives a clear view of Gazin's place on the Pomerol plateau. Budbreak and flowering came early, followed by a warm, dry July and August. According to the producer, the clay-rich soils helped supply water reserves during the dry season, although the drought reduced grape volume. That background suits the style described for this wine: structured, fresh, youthful and made with time in mind.
After sorting and destemming, the grapes were brought at low temperature into concrete vats for cold pre-fermentation maceration. Alcoholic fermentation took place without added sulphur, under biocontrol. The wine then spent around 16 months in barriques, partly new and partly one-wine barrels.
At Drankenshop Broekmans, Chateau Gazin 2020 sits in the Bordeaux selection as a Pomerol for patient cellaring rather than immediate drinking. The producer recommends roughly ten years of bottle age before opening and estimates the ageing potential at around thirty years. Strong critical recognition for this exact vintage, including 96/100 from James Suckling, 95/100 from Vinous and 93+/100 from The Wine Advocate, reflects the same idea: dark-fruited depth, freshness and firm structure in a wine still at an early stage. Château Gazin is a French winery from the famous Bordeaux region and is known for its production of red wine on the right bank area of the Dordogne river. The estate is located in Pomerol, a relatively small but prestigious wine appellation that is internationally regarded as the birthplace of some of the most highly valued Bordeaux wines.
