Product info about Chateau Rieussec 2020
Chateau Rieussec 2020 is a sweet white wine from Sauternes, shaped by noble rot and by a vintage that demanded patience. Rieussec is a 1er Grand Cru Classé de Sauternes et Barsac from the 1855 classification and has belonged to Domaines Barons de Rothschild Lafite since 1984. Its vineyards lie in the Sauternes area where the humidity associated with the Ciron and Garonne is important for the development of Botrytis cinerea, the noble rot that gives this style its concentration.The 2020 growing season was far from straightforward. A warm start, spring rainfall and then a long dry spell meant that finding enough high-quality botrytised grapes took time. The final wine is built mainly around Sémillon from parcels close to the château, supported by Sauvignon Blanc. The blend is 92% Sémillon and 8% Sauvignon Blanc, combining generous sweetness with a noticeable line of freshness.
The cellar work was handled with care: hand harvesting in small crates, cooling before pressing and gentle pressing to preserve aromatic lift. The Sémillon fermented in new oak barrels, while the Sauvignon Blanc was generally kept in temperature-controlled stainless steel to maintain its aromatic clarity. Ageing in barriques, including time on the lees with regular bâtonnage, adds depth without taking the wine away from its Sauternes identity.
At Drankenshop Broekmans, this 2020 stands out as a serious Bordeaux sweet wine with a very specific vintage story. Production was limited to around 10,000 bottles, and with the last bottles now available, it is a fitting choice for those moments when a glass of Sauternes is allowed to take its time: as an aperitif, with small dishes, or simply as a quietly contemplative bottle.
