For someone specifically looking for a Japanese gin with extra intensity, Ki No Bi Sei is a concise but distinctive answer. It does not need an elaborate story to make its point; the origin, brand and 54.5% strength already set the tone.

About KI NO BI

Ki No Bi is a Japanese gin that is made in Kyoto, a city with a rich tradition of craftsmanship and refinement. The gin is produced by The Kyoto Distillery, which was founded in 2016 and is known as the first specialty gin distillery in Japan. Ki No Bi literally means the beauty of the seasons and that idea is reflected in the careful use of local ingrediënts, such as yuzu from northern Kyoto, sansho pepper, bamboo leaves and gyokuro tea from Uji. The gin distinguishes itself through its unique production method: the botanicals are divided into six different categorieës and distilled separately, after which they are combined for the final result. In terms of taste, Ki No Bi brings together traditional Japanese aroma`s with the recognizable juniper note of gin, resulting in a floral, fresh and slightly spicy style. In a relatively short time, the brand has gained international acclaim and won various awards for its innovative approach and distinctive flavor profile. Ki No Bi represents a modern perspective on gin, rooted in Japanese tradition and quality, and offers an interesting choice for enthusiasts who want to broaden their horizons with a gin that is different from the usual Western styles.

Frequently asked questions

Is Ki No Bi Sei suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Ki No Bi Sei is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular gin combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced gin-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Ki No Bi Sei might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is Ki No Bi Sei een goede keuze voor mij?

This Ki No Bi Sei can be a gin one that suits you if you like a gin with a floral character. Indeed, this florality is quite emphatic in the flavour profile.

However, we recommend that you also look at the rest of the flavour profile, as this florality is of course only one part of the overall character of this gin.

Is Ki No Bi Sei a spicy gin?

Yes, Ki No Bi Sei is a gin with a fairly spicy flavour profile: the spiciness of this gin will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

The spiciness of a spirit can come about in different ways.

  • In whisky, the spicy notes mainly arise during the maturation process in wooden casks. The type of wood used (e.g. American oak, European oak) and whether the casks have been used before (e.g. sherry casks) have a big influence on the spiciness of the whisky that comes out of them.
  • With rum, the spicy notes can also come from the barrels used, but in addition there is also a separate class of "Spiced rum" where extra spices are added.
  • Gin has a much shorter production cycle and therefore does not usually get its spiciness from wood. Spicy notes in a gin are usually the direct result of the botanicals used to "colour" the gin and give it its own identity.
Is Ki No Bi Sei a fruity gin?

Yes, Ki No Bi Sei is a gin with an intensely fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this gin will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruits and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Is Ki No Bi Sei a sweet gin?

By itself, yes, but the sweetness in this Ki No Bi Sei gin is only slightly present in the flavour profile.

Sweet gin is usually the most accessible version. Because that pronounced sweetness is missing here, it may be a gin that does not strike a mainstream chord with everyone.

Does Ki No Bi Sei have a high alcohol content?

Gin of more than 52% is rather rare. Often, such a high alcohol content is due to the fact that it is a cask strength gin (a gin cask strength): the gin in that case is not diluted before bottling so it goes into the bottle at a higher alcohol content. Gin with a high alcohol content often benefits from a few drops of water to release the aromas and make the alcohol less predominant in the glass, and in itself is also fine for use in stronger cocktails.
