Nicolas Catena Zapata 2019 in double magnum is a Mendoza red with a sense of occasion built into the bottle size. At 3 litres, it is not a separate cuvée name but a larger format of a wine made for the table, for patience and for sharing.Catena Zapata positions this wine as an Argentine interpretation of a historic Bordeaux-style blend, with Malbec playing a central role alongside Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. The 2019 blend is 42% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Malbec and 28% Cabernet Franc, sourced from high-altitude vineyards in Mendoza, including sites in the Uco Valley such as Adrianna Vineyard in Gualtallary and Nicasia Vineyard in Paraje Altamira.
The 2019 vintage in Mendoza is described as very dry, giving small, healthy berries and powerful wines. In this bottling, that translates into concentration supported by freshness and firm structure. The grapes are hand harvested, fermented in small oak barrels, concrete and stainless steel, then aged for 18 months in French oak barrels.
