Chateau Leoville Las Cases 2019 is the Grand Vin of Leoville du Marquis de Las Cases, a red Bordeaux from Saint-Julien in the Médoc. The estate is classified as a Deuxième Grand Cru Classé in the 1855 classification, and this wine should be seen separately from Clos du Marquis and Le Petit Lion du Marquis de Las Cases.The 2019 blend is firmly led by cabernet sauvignon at 79%, with merlot and cabernet franc completing the composition. Most of the fruit comes from the Clos Leoville Las Cases, on the Saint-Julien side facing towards Pauillac. Gravel, sandy gravel and clay-based subsoils, together with the influence of the Gironde, form the setting that the estate highlights as particularly suited to cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc.
The growing season moved from a mild end to winter into a cool spring, followed by a dry, warm summer. Temperature differences before harvest helped preserve freshness while allowing full ripening. The wine was raised in French barriques with a high proportion of new oak, though the tasting descriptions point first to structure, precision and the cabernet-driven nature of the wine rather than overt wood.
