Product info about Les Valentines 2018
Les Valentines 2018 is the second wine of Château Rol Valentin in Saint-Émilion, Bordeaux. It carries the estate's identity in a generous right-bank style, built mainly around Merlot with a smaller share of Cabernet Franc. The emphasis is on ripe dark fruit, structure and the polished influence of oak ageing.The detail behind the wine is worth noting. The grapes come from vines averaging around 40 years old, planted on old sandy soils over clay and on clay-limestone slopes and plateaus. Selection starts in the vineyard, followed by harvesting in small crates, destemming, further sorting and no crushing. Fermentation takes place by grape variety in small wooden vats, with gentle pigeage, before ageing on the lees in oak barrels for 14 to 16 months.
At Drankenshop Broekmans, this is the kind of Saint-Émilion Grand Cru we like to explain rather than simply place on a shelf: a second wine with serious vineyard work behind it and a clear sense of Bordeaux craftsmanship. James Suckling awarded the 2018 vintage 91 points, noting its layered fruit, full body and juicy finish. With only the last bottles remaining, it is also a wine that is becoming harder to come back to later.
It is well matched with grilled red meat, sauced meat dishes, stews, game and matured cheeses.
