Flavour notes

Chateau Leoville Las Cases 2003 is full-bodied, concentrated and firmly structured, with ripe tannins and a broad, rounded feel on the palate. Dark fruit leads the way: blackcurrant, cassis, dark cherry, blackberry, blueberry and occasional fig.

Around that fruit come classic Bordeaux notes of pencil shavings, graphite, slate, chalky minerality, tobacco, licorice, smoke, earth and thyme. Chocolate, ganache and a touch of vanilla add further depth.

The finish is long, carrying dark fruit, spice and mineral tones. For such a warm vintage, it remains notably fresh and well composed.

Product info about Chateau Leoville Las Cases 2003

Chateau Leoville Las Cases 2003 is the Grand Vin of Léoville Las Cases, from Saint-Julien in the Médoc. As a Deuxième Grand Cru Classé from the 1855 classification, it carries serious Bordeaux pedigree, but the real point of interest here is how that pedigree meets the very warm 2003 vintage.

The fruit comes mainly from the historic terroirs of the old Domaine de Léoville, especially the walled Clos Léoville Las Cases near Saint-Julien, facing towards Pauillac. Gravel-based soils and the influence of the Gironde give Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc a central voice here. The 2003 blend is 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot and 13% Cabernet Franc, matured in French oak barriques with around 50% new oak.

The growing season was exceptionally hot, with summer temperatures sometimes rising above 40°C. Yet Léoville Las Cases 2003 is repeatedly noted for avoiding an overtly jammy or overheated style. It keeps structure, freshness and a Saint-Julien sense of line alongside the ripeness of the year.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, this is the kind of mature Bordeaux we like to present with a little context: a serious estate, a distinctive vintage and a wine that has already gained bottle development. Careful decanting is sensible, both to let the bouquet open and to separate any natural sediment. Only the last bottles of this vintage remain.

About CH LEOVILLE LAS CASES

Château Lëoville Las Cases is a renowned winery from the Bordeaux region in France, specifically located in the Saint-Julien appellation in the Médoc. The winery has a history dating back to the 17th century and is part of the original Lëoville vineyard, which was split up in the early 19th century. The vineyard of Château Lëoville Las Cases borders closely on that of Château Latour in Pauillac, which contributes to the unique terroir of this estate. In the Bordeaux classification of 1855, Lëoville Las Cases was recognized as Deuxième Grand Cru Classé. The estate is managed by the Delon family and comprises approximately 55 hectares of vineyards. The wine usually consists of a classic Bordeaux blend in which cabernet sauvignon, merlot and cabernet franc play the leading roles. Due to its location and careful vinification, the wines are known for their power, depth and ability to age for a long time. Year after year, the wines of Château Lëoville Las Cases are valued among enthusiasts and collectors for their consistent quality, complexity and aging potential.
