Flavour notes

Yjar 2017 is described as concentrated, with ripe dark and red fruit at its core: black raspberry, plum, fig, blackcurrant, redcurrant, blueberry and raspberry all appear in the available tasting notes. Around that fruit sits a savoury, spicy layer of star anise, clove, green pepper, black pepper, liquorice, tobacco, walnut, dark chocolate, pencil shavings and graphite.

On the palate it is full to medium-full, with rounded, layered and silky tannins. The texture is polished without losing tension, and the finish brings a chalky grip that keeps the wine structured and fresh. Floral accents of rosebud and dried flowers add a refined lift to the ripe fruit and darker savoury notes.

Product info about Yjar 2017

Yjar 2017 is a Spanish red Rioja with an especially compelling starting point: it is the first commercial vintage of Yjar. The wine comes from DOCa Rioja, with a clear focus on Rioja Alavesa and Labastida, and is connected to Telmo Rodríguez and the family estate Granja Nuestra Señora de Remelluri. Its name refers to the historic Duque de Hájar, a link that places the wine firmly within the estate's past.

The heart of the wine is a selected 3.8-hectare vineyard within the historic Remelluri estate, at the foot of the Sierra de Toloño. Old bush vines, a mixed planting including Tempranillo, Graciano, Garnacha, Granegro and Rojal, stony soils and a high-altitude setting between roughly 600 and 800 metres all point to a wine shaped by a very specific place. Maturation took place largely in foudres, and available tasting notes emphasise that the oak does not dominate.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, Yjar 2017 stands out as a limited and highly regarded first release rather than just another Rioja label. Production was very small, around 7,000 to 7,200 bottles, and the wine has been described as powerful, youthful and modern, with ripe fruit supported by freshness and firm structure.

The 2017 vintage in Rioja was officially rated 'Muy Buena', despite frost, drought and an exceptionally early harvest. Reviews specifically note that Yjar handled the challenges of the year well, and major international scores in the high nineties underline the reception of this debut vintage. With the last bottles now in view, it is a fascinating bottle for anyone wanting to explore Rioja through a precise, ambitious and contemporary lens.

About YJAR

Yjar is a Spanish wine brand originating from the Rioja Alavesa region, an area known for its long wine tradition and ideal climatic conditions for viticulture. Behind this brand stands Telmo Rodriguez, a winemaker with renown within the Spanish wine world, who gained recognition through his work at various Spanish estates and his commitment to preserving indigenous grape varieties. Yjar is based on a selection of specific vineyards around the village of Laguardia, where old vines mainly produce Tempranillo, Graciano, Garnacha, and other local grape varieties. The production process is characterized by respect for the terroir and limited production, resulting in a characterful and complex wine that reflects the unique character of the area. For the maturation of the wine, a combination of French and sometimes also American oak barrels is often chosen, aiming for a balanced harmony between fruit, spiciness, and oak influences. The style of Yjar is distinguished by elegance and structure, and the wine has been recognized by connoisseurs as a remarkable Rioja with an idiosyncratic character. The brand has quickly built a reputation among wine lovers looking for modern, refined Spanish wines with depth and expression.
