Joseph Drouhin Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru 2019 is a red Burgundy from one of the most recognised Grand Cru sites of the Côte de Nuits. Clos de Vougeot is a walled vineyard in Vougeot, between Vosne-Romanée and Chambolle-Musigny, with a varied mix of clay and limestone soils. Drouhin owns two plots there on a gentle east-facing slope, giving this wine a very specific place within the wider Clos de Vougeot story.

The wine is made from pinot noir, with fruit coming partly from Drouhin family parcels and partly from grapes or must selected from long-standing partners under strict specifications. Harvesting is by hand, fermentation takes place with native yeasts in small open vats, and for the 2019 vintage around 40% whole clusters are mentioned. Maturation follows for 16 to 20 months in French oak barrels, about 30% of them new.

The colour is deep ruby. Aromatically, it moves through ripe red and dark fruit: raspberry, wild cherry, dark cherry, cassis, plum and boysenberry, with orange peel and candied fruit adding extra lift.

Beneath the fruit there is a more earthy register of sous-bois, undergrowth, truffle, leather, tobacco and incense. Liquorice, spices and white pepper bring tension and structure, in line with the whole-cluster element noted for this vintage.

On the palate it is described as medium to full bodied, concentrated and still youthful in build. The tannins are refined but firm, giving grip and compactness, while the finish carries a peppery edge that points to further development with time.
