Sena 2019 is a red wine from Chile's Aconcagua Valley, built with a Bordeaux-inspired idea but shaped by a clearly Chilean identity. Cabernet Sauvignon forms the core of the blend, supported by Malbec, Carmenere and Petit Verdot. The Carmenere matters here: it gives the wine a distinctly Chilean voice rather than making it feel like a straightforward Bordeaux imitation.

The 2019 vintage is also the 25th anniversary release of Sena. The grapes come from vineyards farmed according to biodynamic principles. While Chile as a whole experienced a warm year, the Sena vineyard saw a cooler than average summer, helped by its proximity to the sea and the influence of coastal winds. That slower ripening period helped preserve fruit intensity and freshness while allowing the tannins to mature gradually.

Most of the wine was fermented in stainless steel, with a smaller portion in concrete, followed by 22 months of ageing in French oak, mainly new barriques with a smaller share in foudres. That maturation supports the wine's structure and polish without taking attention away from the fruit, freshness and mineral detail described in the vintage notes. The strong critical reception, including high scores from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, James Suckling, Decanter and Vinous, underlines how highly this release has been regarded.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, Sena 2019 is a bottle we would place among the serious Chilean reds with real ageing potential. With only the last bottles remaining, it is a wine to choose thoughtfully: either for further cellaring or for a considered table moment with beef, lamb, game, grilled dishes, mushrooms, grilled vegetables or mature cheeses.

In the glass, Sena 2019 shows a deep, bright ruby colour with purple nuances. The aromatic profile moves through red and black fruit: cassis, blueberry, plum, blackberry, cherry and red berries. Around that fruit sit orange peel, mint, dill and rosemary, followed by pepper, graphite, wet stone, cedar, coffee, vanilla and a light pastry note.

On the palate it is medium to full-bodied, with freshness running through the dark fruit, red fruit, spice and mineral accents. The tannins are fine yet firm, the texture polished and the length clearly present. The producer notes that the wine still benefits from time in bottle to show itself fully.
