Flavour notes

The aromatic profile is led by dark fruit: cassis, black cherry, plum, blueberry, black raspberry and currant-like notes. Floral touches of rose petal and violet add lift, while cedar, tobacco, graphite, pencil shavings, earth, liquorice, menthol, sandalwood, leather and light smoky or mineral nuances bring a more classical Saint-Julien depth.

On the palate it is described as powerful, creamy and supple, with fresh fruit and a silky opening. The tannins are present yet velvety, the acidity keeps the wine fresh, and the concentrated fruit core carries through into a long finish.

Product info about Chateau Lagrange 2019

Château Lagrange 2019 is the grand vin of this Saint-Julien estate in the Médoc, a dry red Bordeaux from a property classified as a Troisième Grand Cru Classé in 1855. The 2019 blend is particularly Cabernet-driven: 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, with 18% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot. The château describes this as a record proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon for Lagrange, and that detail says a great deal about the wine's direction: freshness, structure and length take centre stage.

The growing season began with a cold, wet spring, followed by a dry, hot summer with abundant sunshine. Harvest was the longest the estate had experienced up to that point, with a deliberate pause between Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon to allow the Cabernet to develop further phenolic ripeness. Only 33% of production was selected for the first wine, drawn from vines averaging 45 years of age.

The estate worked with notable precision: hand harvesting in individual crates, a first selection of whole bunches, then berry-by-berry optical sorting. Vinification took place parcel by parcel in temperature-controlled stainless-steel vats, followed by 21 months in oak barrels, 50% of them new.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, this is the kind of Bordeaux we like to explain rather than simply place on the shelf: a Saint-Julien shaped by Cabernet Sauvignon, careful selection and a vintage with serious ageing potential. The producer's drinking window runs from 2024 to 2050, and young bottles benefit from time in a carafe. These are the last remaining bottles of this vintage.

About CH LAGRANGE

Château Lagrange is a well-known wine producer from the Bordeaux region in France, located in the prestigious appellation of Saint-Julien on the left bank of the Gironde. The wine estate has a long history that goes back to the 18th century, with a prominent mention as Troisième Grand Cru Classé since the famous classification of 1855. The estate encompasses over 100 hectares of vineyards, where mainly Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot are cultivated. Under the management of various owners throughout the centuries, including the Japanese Suntory since 1983, Château Lagrange has invested in modern vinification techniques and vineyard management, contributing to the consistent quality of their wines. The style of Château Lagrange is known for its balance, elegance, and the potential to age for a long time. In addition to the classic Grand Vin, the house also produces a second wine under the name Les Fiefs de Lagrange. The wines of Château Lagrange are loved by connoisseurs for their refined character and the typical, structured style of Saint-Julien.
