Product info about The Cally 40y 2015

The Cally 40y 2015 is a 40-year-old Scottish grain whisky from Caledonian, distilled in 1974 and matured in bourbon hogsheads. As a Lowland grain whisky of this age, it speaks first and foremost of patience: decades in cask, presented without reduction at 53.3% alcohol.

Its profile is built around a clear presence of fruit and wood, with spice in a supporting role and a lighter floral note in the background. There is no peat-driven or salty character indicated here, so the focus remains firmly on mature grain whisky, cask influence and the long passage of time.

Only 5060 bottles were released, and with the last bottles now in view, The Cally 40y 2015 has become one of those bottlings that feels increasingly tied to a specific moment in whisky history. At Drankenshop Broekmans, we see releases like this as especially interesting because they show how distinctive an old grain whisky can be when given four decades to develop.

This is a bottle for someone looking beyond the obvious, towards mature Scottish grain whisky with age, structure and a quietly compelling story.

About CALEDONIAN

Caledonian is a name that in the Scottish whisky world mainly goes back to the legendary Caledonian Distillery, which was founded in Edinburgh in 1855. This distillery was known at the time as one of the largest grain distilleries in Scotland and gave its name to various whiskies and blends. Although the original Caledonian Distillery already closed its doors in 1988, the name lives on in select bottlings of old grain whisky or as a brand name for blends that aim to reflect Scottish traditions. Whisky under this name is usually characterized by its typical grain base, which ensures a softer and more accessible style compared to many malt whiskies. Original single grain bottlings are rare but appreciated by enthusiasts for their mild character and sometimes exceptionally long maturation. Nowadays, Caledonian can still be found occasionally, often as a tribute to the Scottish whisky heritage and the influence of the historic distillery on the development of blended whiskies in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of whisky is The Cally 40y 2015?

The Cally 40y 2015 is a grain whisky .

Grain whisky is made from a grain other than barley, such as wheat and/or maize. It is distilled in fairly large-scale column stills, also known as distillery columns.

As with malt whisky, in this category you also have 'single grain' whisky that comes from just one distillery, and 'blended' whisky that comes from multiple distilleries. Both variants are not very common.

Is The Cally 40y 2015 a no age statement whisky (NAS)?

No, The Cally 40y 2015 is not a no age statement (NAS) whisky. The label explicitly states an age and that age represents the youngest whisky found in the bottle (or in the blend).

Is The Cally 40y 2015 a single cask whisky?

No, The Cally 40y 2015 is not a single cask whisky.

Is The Cally 40y 2015 a whisky at cask strength?

Yes, The Cally 40y 2015 is a whisky cask strength. A cask strength whisky is not diluted with water before bottling, but goes straight from the cask into the bottle and therefore retains the alcohol percentage during/after cask maturation.

One of the advantages of a cask-strength whisky is that, as a drinker, you can decide how strong you like your whisky by diluting or not diluting it with a little water yourself according to your preference, instead of the producer having already done this for you.

Is The Cally 40y 2015 suitable to give as a gift?

Although this The Cally 40y 2015 is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular whisky combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced whisky-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one The Cally 40y 2015 might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is The Cally 40y 2015 a whisky to invest in?

The Cally 40y 2015 is a whisky of Caledonian that was referred to by us as a Collector'swhisky. That is, we believe they have the most potential to increase in value over time.

Whether that will actually happen we obviously cannot predict. We therefore always advise never to invest or speculate in whisky that you would never want to drink yourself out of.

Is The Cally 40y 2015 een goede keuze voor mij?

This The Cally 40y 2015 can be a whisky that suits you if you like a whisky with a woody character. Indeed, this woodiness is quite emphatic in the flavour profile.

However, we recommend that you also check out the rest of the flavour profile, as this is of course only one part of the overall character of this whisky.

Is The Cally 40y 2015 a tarred whisky?

No, there is no peat in the flavour profile in this The Cally 40y 2015 whisky . The absence of any smokiness therefore makes it suitable for those who do not like a peat flavour.

Is The Cally 40y 2015 a spicy whisky?

On its own, yes, but this The Cally 40y 2015 is one whisky with only a slightly spicy flavour profile: the spiciness of this whisky is not emphatic in the flavour profile, but it is there.

The spiciness of a spirit can come about in different ways.

  • In whisky, the spicy notes mainly arise during the maturation process in wooden casks. The type of wood used (e.g. American oak, European oak) and whether the casks have been used before (e.g. sherry casks) have a big influence on the spiciness of the whisky that comes out of them.
  • With rum, the spicy notes can also come from the barrels used, but in addition there is also a separate class of "Spiced rum" where extra spices are added.
  • Gin has a much shorter production cycle and therefore does not usually get its spiciness from wood. Spicy notes in a gin are usually the direct result of the botanicals used to "colour" the gin and give it its own identity.
Is The Cally 40y 2015 a fruity whisky?

Yes, The Cally 40y 2015 is a whisky with a moderately fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruit and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Do you drink The Cally 40y 2015 pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this The Cally 40y 2015 whisky best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to whisky. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your whisky, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does The Cally 40y 2015 have a high alcohol content?

Whisky of more than 52% is rather rare. Often, such a high alcohol content is due to the fact that it is a cask strength whisky (a whisky cask strength): the whisky in that case is not diluted before bottling so it goes into the bottle at a higher alcohol content. Whisky with a high alcohol content often benefits from a few drops of water to release the aromas and make the alcohol less predominant in the glass, and in itself is also fine for use in stronger cocktails.

Is The Cally 40y 2015 an independent bottling?

No, The Cally 40y 2015 is an official bottling of Caledonian.

Is The Cally 40y 2015 suitable for an Irish Coffee?

To make an Irish Coffee according to the rules of the art, you need an Irish whiskey. Since you are going to mix it with coffee and whipped cream, we recommend using a good, but not overpriced whiskey. This The Cally 40y 2015 is a whiskey, but because this whiskey comes from Scotland it is not the best choice to make a "real" Irish Coffee.

Did you know that the first Irish Coffee was invented in 1942 by bartender Joe Sheridan? He was working at the airport in Foynes, in the west of Ireland. The barman saw some tired passengers and figured they needed coffee with something special. To perk them up, he poured them coffee with a dash of whiskey mixed in and some coffee on top. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridon replied, "No, my friend, this is Irish Coffee." And so it was.

Is The Cally 40y 2015 vegan?

According to the data currently available to us, we cannot state with certainty that this product is vegan and this claim is not explicitly made by the brand.

Is The Cally 40y 2015 a biological whisky?

Based on the information available to us, we can conclude that this The Cally 40y 2015 whisky from Caledonian is not an organic product.

How do I get started on Scotch whisky?

Many people assume that a more expensive bottle of Scotch whisky is automatically better. It sounds logical: the higher the price, the better the quality. But in reality, the difference between a bottle of a few tens and one worth thousands of euros is rarely purely in the taste. What you pay has much more to do with age, scarcity, marketing and reputation than with what you actually taste in your glass.

To understand this properly, it helps to look at Scotch in different "levels". Each level tells you something about what you are drinking and, more importantly, what you are paying for, but not every epicurean goes through all these levels.

You can read all about it in our blog post Why an expensive Scotch doesn't necessarily taste better - the different levels of Scotch.
