Flavour notes

Depaz Plantation has a restrained flavour profile, with light floral, fruity, spicy and woody elements rather than one dominant note.

Sweetness is not a defining feature in the supplied profile, so the overall impression is more about subtle cane-juice character and measured cask influence than a rich or sugary style.

Product info about Depaz Plantation

Depaz Plantation is a Martinique rum made from sugar cane juice, placing it in a style where the raw material itself plays a central role. Rather than leaning on obvious sweetness, it points toward a more restrained and nuanced expression of rum.

It is traditionally column distilled and bottled at 45%, giving it enough presence while keeping the profile composed. The bourbon cask element adds a gentle wood dimension, though no age statement is given for this release.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, we see Depaz Plantation as a rum for drinkers who want to explore Martinique and sugar cane juice rum in a subtler register. Its character is shaped by light floral, fruity, spicy and woody accents, without one element dominating the whole.

About DEPAZ

Depaz Distillery is one of the smallest rum distilleries in Martinique. You will find it in a green oasis at the foot of Mont Pelée. At Depaz, rum is still made as it was in the past, with an old steam engine. At the heart of the distillery, this machine produces the energy needed to power the machines that grind the sugar cane and the stills themselves.

The start of Depaz's story was in 1651, in a then farm on the La Montagne estate. which was founded by Jacques Duparquet, the island's governor. It originally grew tobacco and raised cattle, but soon switched to planting sugar cane. A distillery also followed. Many families were employed here, including Victor Depaz's. As the distillery grew, the town of Saint Pierre also grew to become the largest rum port in the world, earning it the nickname 'The Little Paris of the Antilles'.

That growth was abruptly ended on 8 May 1902 by a massive eruption of Mont Pelée, which wiped the entire town off the map. Victor Depaz was studying in Bordeaux at the time. His entire family was killed in that eruption, and all possessions were destroyed. Victor returned and 15 years later, on 8 May 1917, he started a new distillery and sugar cane plantation on the flanks of Mont Pelée. There he also built a copy of the Périnelle, his childhood home, which would soon be known as Depaz Castle. There he lived from 1922 with his 11 children, some of whom would later also take over the distillery.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of rum is Depaz Plantation?

Depaz Plantation is a sugar cane juice rum .

Sugar Cane Juice rum is known for its natural, unadulterated taste of sugar cane. In this rum, the juice is directly fermented and then distilled.

Is Depaz Plantation a no age statement rum (NAS)?

Yes, Depaz Plantation is a no age statement (NAS) rum. But what exactly does that mean?

According to the rules, when an age is stated on the bottle, it must always be the youngest whisky in the blend and not the age that is the most represented percentage-wise in the blend. A producer will therefore consciously choose not to state an age on his bottle in two cases: when an old whisky is blended with a small proportion of younger whisky, or when young whisky is blended with a proportion of older whisky. In the first case, he does not want to put a young age on his bottle if his blend contains mainly older whisky, and in the second case, from a marketing point of view it is more interesting to go out with that particle of older whisky.

Is Depaz Plantation a single cask rum?

No, Depaz Plantation is not a single cask rum.

Is Depaz Plantation a rum at cask strength?

No, Depaz Plantation is not rum at cask strength.

Is Depaz Plantation suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Depaz Plantation is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular rum combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced rum-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Depaz Plantation might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is Depaz Plantation a spicy rum?

On its own, yes, but this Depaz Plantation is one rum with only a slightly spicy flavour profile: the spiciness of this rum is not emphatic in the flavour profile, but it is there.

The spiciness of a spirit can come about in different ways.

  • In whisky, the spicy notes mainly arise during the maturation process in wooden casks. The type of wood used (e.g. American oak, European oak) and whether the casks have been used before (e.g. sherry casks) have a big influence on the spiciness of the whisky that comes out of them.
  • With rum, the spicy notes can also come from the barrels used, but in addition there is also a separate class of "Spiced rum" where extra spices are added.
  • Gin has a much shorter production cycle and therefore does not usually get its spiciness from wood. Spicy notes in a gin are usually the direct result of the botanicals used to "colour" the gin and give it its own identity.
Is Depaz Plantation a fruity rum?

On its own, yes, but Depaz Plantation is a rum with only a slightly fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this rum is hidden in the flavour profile, balanced with the other parts of the profile.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruit and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Do you drink Depaz Plantation pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Depaz Plantation rum best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to rum. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your rum, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does Depaz Plantation have a high alcohol content?

The alcohol content of this Depaz Plantation is higher than what you would expect from an average rum expect. While not extremely exceptional, a rum of around 46% is somewhat rarer anyway. Most rum is usually closer to 40%.

Is Depaz Plantation an independent bottling?

No, Depaz Plantation is an official bottling of Depaz.

Is Depaz Plantation a solera rum?

No, Depaz Plantation is not produced according to the solera system.

Is Depaz Plantation suitable for making a Dark 'n Stormy cocktail?

The "Dark 'n Stormy" cocktail is a protected trademark of Gosling Brothers Ltd. According to official rules, a cocktail may therefore only be called Dark 'N Stormy (with one apostrophe) if it is made with Gosling's Rum and ginger beer.

Since Gosling only registered the name with single apostrophe, the same cocktail is also described elsewhere as a Dark 'n' Stormy (with double apostrophe) or as a Safe Harbor in an attempt to get out from under the trademark and licensing problems.

If you don't mind the official designation and want to make a cocktail based on the recipe of the official Dark 'n Stormy, this Depaz Plantation is definitely a good choice. To make an official, correct Dark 'n Stormy, however, you need Gosling's Black Seal rum.

Is Depaz Plantation vegan?

According to the data currently available to us, we cannot state with certainty that this product is vegan and this claim is not explicitly made by the brand.

Is Depaz Plantation a biological rum?

Based on the information available to us, we can conclude that this Depaz Plantation rum from Depaz is not an organic product.
