The aroma is intense and harmonious, bringing together old wood and aged eaux-de-vie with a generous sweetness of plums and macerated fruit. Notes of Indian wood and blond tobacco wrap around the fruit and give the nose a mature, enveloping quality. On the palate, old oak is clearly present, joined by a lightly empyreumatic edge. It feels round and long, with candied fruit and dried fruit carrying the flavour through the finish.

Product info about Bally Grande Cuvee
Bally Grande Cuvee is built around a clear sense of occasion. Created as the Grande Cuvée du Siècle for 1923-2023, it pays tribute to the founding of J. Bally on the west coast of Martinique and to a century of French prestige associated with the name.In the rum range at Drankenshop Broekmans, this release stands out because it brings different chapters of J. Bally together in one decanter. Marc Sassier blended vintages from 1929, 1939, 1955, 1975 and 2008, using their individual traits to shape the final composition: old wood, empyreumatic depth, fruitiness, roundness and cohesion.
The presentation is part of the same story. The pyramid-shaped decanter refers to the Arts Décoratifs movement and comes in a dedicated box with a second Art Deco stopper. It is a fitting frame for a rum whose background also speaks of continuity: although the original distillery has closed, the heirs have passed on the key to the cellar so that the J. Bally story can continue.
Bottled at 45%, Bally Grande Cuvee is a rum to take time with. Its interest lies in the meeting of rare old vintages, Martinique rum heritage and a presentation that deliberately connects past and present.
The aroma is intense and harmonious, bringing together old wood and aged eaux-de-vie with a generous sweetness of plums and macerated fruit. Notes of Indian wood and blond tobacco wrap around the fruit and give the nose a mature, enveloping quality.

About J. BALLY
The story begins when Jacques Bally bought a small sugar refinery. He transformed it into a distillery. His engineering background came in handy, and he designed his own unique column still and installed a steam engine to power everything. From 1924, he started focusing on rum maturation and Bally gained great fame in the 1950s and 1960s as one of the best rhum agricoles in the world. Jacques Bally also developed the famous pyramid-shaped bottle himself in the 1930s, in collaboration with Saint-Gobain.
Production moved to the Saint James site in 1976, and since then everything is done at the Distillerie du Simon, but still following Bally's own original principles and techniques.

Bally Grande Cuvee is a unknown rum .

Is Bally Grande Cuvee suitable to give as a gift?
Although this Bally Grande Cuvee is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular rum combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced rum-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Bally Grande Cuvee might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.
Is Bally Grande Cuvee een goede keuze voor mij?
This Bally Grande Cuvee can be a rum that suits you if you like a rum with a woody character. Indeed, this woodiness is quite emphatic in the flavour profile.
However, we recommend that you also check out the rest of the flavour profile, as this is of course only one part of the overall character of this rum.
Is Bally Grande Cuvee a spicy rum?
Yes, Bally Grande Cuvee is a rum with a fairly spicy flavour profile: the spiciness of this rum will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.
The spiciness of a spirit can come about in different ways.
- In whisky, the spicy notes mainly arise during the maturation process in wooden casks. The type of wood used (e.g. American oak, European oak) and whether the casks have been used before (e.g. sherry casks) have a big influence on the spiciness of the whisky that comes out of them.
- With rum, the spicy notes can also come from the barrels used, but in addition there is also a separate class of "Spiced rum" where extra spices are added.
- Gin has a much shorter production cycle and therefore does not usually get its spiciness from wood. Spicy notes in a gin are usually the direct result of the botanicals used to "colour" the gin and give it its own identity.
Is Bally Grande Cuvee a fruity rum?
Yes, Bally Grande Cuvee is a rum with a moderately fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this rum will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.
- Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruit and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
- Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Is Bally Grande Cuvee a sweet rum?
By itself, yes, but the sweetness in this Bally Grande Cuvee rum is only slightly present in the flavour profile.
Sweet rum is usually the most accessible version. Because that pronounced sweetness is missing here, it may be a rum that does not strike a mainstream chord with everyone.
Do you drink Bally Grande Cuvee pure or with ice?
Whether you drink this Bally Grande Cuvee rum best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to rum. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your rum, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.
Does Bally Grande Cuvee have a high alcohol content?
The alcohol content of this Bally Grande Cuvee is higher than what you would expect from an average rum expect. While not extremely exceptional, a rum of around 46% is somewhat rarer anyway. Most rum is usually closer to 40%.
Is Bally Grande Cuvee an independent bottling?
Bally Grande Cuvee is a rum of the J. Bally brand bottled by the independent bottler . That makes this bottle an independent bottling.
Is Bally Grande Cuvee a solera rum?
No, Bally Grande Cuvee is not produced according to the solera system.
Is Bally Grande Cuvee suitable for making a Dark 'n Stormy cocktail?
The "Dark 'n Stormy" cocktail is a protected trademark of Gosling Brothers Ltd. According to official rules, a cocktail may therefore only be called Dark 'N Stormy (with one apostrophe) if it is made with Gosling's Rum and ginger beer.
Since Gosling only registered the name with single apostrophe, the same cocktail is also described elsewhere as a Dark 'n' Stormy (with double apostrophe) or as a Safe Harbor in an attempt to get out from under the trademark and licensing problems.
If you don't mind the official designation and want to make a cocktail based on the recipe of the official Dark 'n Stormy, this Bally Grande Cuvee is definitely a good choice. To make an official, correct Dark 'n Stormy, however, you need Gosling's Black Seal rum.
Is Bally Grande Cuvee vegan?
According to the data currently available to us, we cannot state with certainty that this product is vegan and this claim is not explicitly made by the brand.
Is Bally Grande Cuvee a biological rum?
Based on the information available to us, we can conclude that this Bally Grande Cuvee rum from J. Bally is not an organic product.
