Freixenet originates from Spain and is recognized worldwide primarily as a producer of cava, the popular sparkling wine from the Penedès region in Catalonia. The family business was founded in 1861 and has a long tradition of making sparkling wines according to the traditional method, in which the second fermentation takes place in the bottle. Since the early twentieth century, the brand has specialized in cava and has grown into one of the best-known names in this category. The name Freixenet is derived from the Catalan word for ash, a type of tree that was common in the area surrounding the original vineyards. The assortment includes both fresh, fruity varieties and more complex, long-aged cavas, often based on the Macabeo, Xarel-lo and Parellada grapes. Freixenet uses mostly its own vineyards and combines traditional knowledge with modern technology to ensure a consistent quality standard.
