Montes Muse Cabernet Sauvignon 2021 is a Chilean red wine with a genuinely personal background. Aurelio Montes Sr. introduced this cuvée as a tribute to the women in his family who influenced him. Within the Montes range, Muse belongs to the producer's higher icon-level wines, built around Cabernet Sauvignon with small additions of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc for added dimension and length.The fruit comes from Alto Maipo, at the foot of the Andes, from vineyards around 460 metres above sea level on the southern bank of the Maipo River. The alluvial soils, with stones, clay, silt and sand, are described as low in fertility and well drained. For the 2021 vintage, the available information points to grapes with concentrated colour and aroma. Eighteen months in French oak, much of it new, adds depth without pushing the wine into heaviness.
At Drankenshop Broekmans, we see this as a serious Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon with a refined side: structured and concentrated, yet described for this cooler vintage as more delicate, juicy and polished than forceful. Production is stated at around 6,000 bottles, so the fact that these are the last bottles adds to the sense of rarity around this vintage.
The strong recognition from international wine publications supports the reputation of the 2021 release. Montes also indicates ageing potential of more than 15 years, making this a bottle with a future, while careful decanting can already reveal a great deal of its character today.
