Clos Apalta 2021 is the grand vin of Clos Apalta, from Apalta in Chile's Colchagua Valley. Carmenère leads the blend, supported by Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, giving the wine a clear sense of place: dark-fruited, spicy and structured, yet carried by enough freshness to keep its power in check.The 2021 vintage came from an unusual growing season. A mild, wetter winter was followed by wider spring temperature shifts, early flowering and unexpected rain around véraison. The remainder of the season was cooler than the historical average, allowing the grapes to ripen slowly and to be harvested in healthy condition. The vineyard sits between 185 and 385 metres above sea level, shaped by the Tinguiririca River and the hills of the Coastal Cordillera, with old, well-drained soils including granite, stones and sandy to sandy-loam textures.
In the cellar, the wine was given a serious, carefully measured approach: a long maceration, fermentation largely in French oak vats and 21 months of ageing in French oak barrels. According to the technical information, it was bottled unfined and unfiltered.
