Flavour notes

Château Lagrange 2021 shows a dark red to ruby-purple colour with a crimson rim. The aromatic profile brings together strawberry and raspberry with blackcurrant, plum and black cherry. Cedar, tobacco, pencil shavings, graphite and violet add a more classical Saint-Julien register, with light spice and occasional chocolate notes.

On the palate it sits between medium and medium-full bodied, opening in a supple, fleshy way before fresh acidity and defined tannins take over. The Cabernet Sauvignon influence is clear in the wine's firm yet refined structure. The finish is composed and structured, carrying red and black berry fruit, floral notes, cedar, tobacco and graphite.

Product info about Chateau Lagrange 2021

Château Lagrange 2021 is the grand vin of Château Lagrange in Saint-Julien, Bordeaux. As a Troisième Grand Cru Classé from the 1855 classification, it comes with a clear sense of place and pedigree. The estate's red vineyard lies in Saint-Julien-Beychevelle, on north-south gravel ridges with clay and limestone beneath the surface.

What makes the 2021 vintage especially noteworthy is the blend: 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot. That Cabernet share is particularly high for Château Lagrange. The grapes came from vines averaging 45 years old, and the selection was meticulous, with hand harvesting in small crates, sorting of whole bunches and a second berry-by-berry optical selection. Vinification was carried out parcel by parcel, and even within parcels where needed.

The growing season was cool, yet the estate describes that freshness as important for the wine's balance. During a spell of better late-season weather, Château Lagrange paused the harvest to give the Cabernet Sauvignon more time. The grapes gained concentration, while skins and tannins became more refined. The wine then spent 21 months in barriques, half of them new.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, we see this as a Saint-Julien for those who appreciate classical Bordeaux structure, Cabernet precision and the patience that a serious bottle can ask for. The official drinking window runs from 2025 to 2050, so this is a wine with time ahead of it. These are also the last bottles in our selection, which adds to the sense of occasion around this release.

In addition to the classic Grand Vin, the house also produces a second wine under the name Les Fiefs de Lagrange. The wines of Château Lagrange are loved by connoisseurs for their refined character and the typical, structured style of Saint-Julien.
