Marques De Riscal Tapias 2020 is a red Rioja with a very precise sense of origin. It comes from Finca Las Tapias in Elciego, within Rioja Alavesa, where Marqués de Riscal selected a small section of a vineyard the estate regards as one of its finest.The wine is made from Tempranillo planted in 1968 through massal selection. Its setting on old Ebro terraces, with a looser gravel-rich soil and a limestone layer deeper down, gives useful context to the wine's identity. The vineyard surroundings include Mediterranean herbs such as thyme, lavender, sage and rosemary, adding to the impression of a wine built around place rather than a broad regional formula.
After 20 months in French oak barrels, Tapias also nods to the historic Bordeaux-influenced wines made by Marqués de Riscal in the nineteenth century during the Médoc Alavés period.
