Flavour notes

The wine shows a garnet colour in the glass. Aromatically, it brings together red and dark fruit: cassis, blackcurrant, blackberry, dark cherry, plum and raspberry, with dried flowers and orange peel adding lift. Beneath that sit cedar, tobacco, black tea, incense, graphite and a mineral, slightly iron-like nuance.

On the palate it is dry, medium to full in body, with fine to firm tannins and well-measured acidity. The fruit remains precise, framed by floral and spicy notes. The finish is long and focused, with a refined, lightly grainy texture and a subtle smoky or wood-related touch.

Product info about Chateau Trotte Vieille 2016 (2023 Ex Chateau)

Chateau Trotte Vieille 2016 is the estate's grand vin from Saint-Emilion, carrying the Premier Grand Cru Classé designation. The 2023 Ex Chateau note points to a release from the château in 2023, an appealing detail for a Bordeaux with serious ageing potential.

A defining feature of this vintage is the high proportion of Cabernet Franc: 53% of the blend, alongside 45% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon. That gives the wine much of its structure, aromatic precision and firm line. The vineyard sits on a south-west-facing slope with clay over limestone, and the vines average around 60 years of age, including a Cabernet Franc parcel planted in 1868.

Maturation took place for 18 to 24 months in new French oak barriques. In its younger phase, several tasting notes indicated that the oak needed time to fold into the wine, which makes sense for a Saint-Emilion built around tannin, freshness and extract. At Drankenshop Broekmans, this is the kind of Bordeaux we would introduce as a serious, château-released bottle with depth rather than immediate charm alone.

With only the last bottles available, it is especially relevant for drinkers looking for a structured 2016 Saint-Emilion that is entering its drinking phase while still retaining further ageing capacity. The producer mentions venison, leg of lamb and soft cheeses as suitable pairings.

About CH TROTTEVIEILLE

Château Trottevieille is a winery from the Bordeaux region of France and is located in the prestigious Saint-Émilion appellation. This producer belongs to the Premier Grand Cru Classé B class according to the famous classification of Saint-Émilion. Château Trottevieille has a relatively small vineyard area, mainly planted with Merlot, complemented by Cabernet Franc and a small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon. The winery is characterized by a long history dating back to the 19th century, with some of the oldest vines in Saint-Émilion, including old pre-phylloxera vines. The wines of Château Trottevieille are known for their classic Bordeaux style; they combine power with elegance and often develop beautifully after several years of bottle aging. Typical are aromas of dark fruit, spices, and a mineral note that is characteristic of the terroir of Saint-Émilion. The name Trottevieille refers, according to local tradition, to an old lady who used to walk regularly past the chateau, although the exact story is difficult to verify. Today, the estate is managed by the Castéja family, who are also involved in other renowned wine estates in Bordeaux.
