Product info about Le Petit Clos 2020 Magnum (1,5l)
Le Petit Clos 2020 Magnum is the second wine of Clos Apalta, from Chile's Apalta Valley within Colchagua. It is made as a Bordeaux-style blend, led by Carmenère and Cabernet Sauvignon, with Merlot and a small proportion of Petit Verdot. In the 1.5-litre magnum format, the wine feels especially well placed for a bottle with this level of structure and concentration.The 2020 growing season was demanding. Clos Apalta reports a severe lack of winter rainfall, a dry and warm spring, frost episodes affecting Cabernet Sauvignon yields, and heatwaves that required careful canopy and irrigation management. The dry conditions also helped keep the grapes healthy, and harvesting was carried out parcel by parcel as ripeness varied across the estate.
In the cellar, the wine received a serious élevage: a 5 to 6 week maceration, alcoholic fermentation in French oak vats, malolactic fermentation in new oak barrels, followed by 26 months in French barriques, 53% of them new. It was bottled without fining or filtration. At Drankenshop Broekmans, we see this magnum as a strong example of Chilean red wine with place, vintage and craftsmanship all clearly present.
The producer's technical sheet lists 95 points from James Suckling for the 2020 vintage. With only the last bottles available, it is a compelling choice for serving after decanting now, while also having the structure to continue developing in the cellar.
