Cantine Sardus Pater Is Solus Carignano del Sulcis 2022 is a red wine from south-western Sardinia, made entirely from Carignano. At Drankenshop Broekmans, we appreciate it for the way it brings together grape, place and local identity: Sant'Antioco, within the Carignano del Sulcis DOC.The grapes come from vineyards at sea level on sandy soils. According to the producer, the vines are trained as alberello, grown on their own roots and average 35 years of age. Cantine Sardus Pater is a cooperative winery with a strong focus on giving Carignano a central role in the wines of Sant'Antioco and the wider Sulcis area.
The wine is vinified in stainless steel, then aged for 12 months in Allier barriques before spending a further 12 months in bottle. That combination keeps the red-fruited side of Carignano in view, while adding a more Mediterranean, balsamic layer to the wine.
Is Solus takes its name from a Roman fountain in the historic centre of Sant'Antioco, and the label refers to a mosaic from the local archaeological museum. It is a Sardinian red with a clear sense of origin, well suited to grilled or roasted red meat and also to pasta with a spicy sauce.
