Madame de Beaucaillou 2020 is a red Haut-Médoc from the wider world of Château Ducru-Beaucaillou, yet it stands apart from the Saint-Julien grand vin. It is made from Borie family vineyards outside Saint-Julien and was created as a tribute to Madame Eugène-Borie. That gives the wine a clear Bordeaux family connection, expressed here through the Haut-Médoc appellation.The blend is led by Merlot Noir at 66%, supported by 24% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Petit Verdot. Twelve months in Bordeaux barrels, with 20% new French oak, add structure while keeping the fruit at the centre of the wine. The 2020 vintage is described through tasting notes as ripe and concentrated, yet also fresh and digestible rather than heavily extracted.
At Drankenshop Broekmans, this is the kind of Bordeaux we like to present when someone wants a bottle with a recognised name behind it, but with the approachable identity of Haut-Médoc. It can be enjoyed in its youth, while the available drinking windows also indicate enough structure for several more years in bottle. Château Ducru-Beaucaillou is a respected winery from the Bordeaux region in France, more specifically located in the Saint-Julien appellation. The estate owes its name to the striking pebbles (beaux cailloux) in the soil, a feature that contributes to the character of the wines. Château Ducru-Beaucaillou belongs to the so-called Deuxièmes Crus Classés according to the famous 1855 classification. The estate has a rich history that dates back to the 18th century and has been managed by the Borie family since 1941. In the vineyards, mainly cabernet sauvignon is planted, supplemented with merlot, which is typical for Saint-Julien. The wines from this house are known for their complexity, elegance and the potential to age well. In addition to the grand vin, the château also produces a second wine: La Croix Ducru-Beaucaillou.
